Here is your new mantra - Don't come to work to work – come to work to network. Every day when you are getting ready to tackle your workplace – repeat this mantra and make it part of your daily habit. DON’T COME TO WORK TO WORK – COME TO WORK TO NETWORK.
If you ask a woman to do something the first thing she is going to do is think about how she is going to do it- writing a list, timelines, schedule meetings or whatever. The never ending to do list – that never seems to get done. Just curious has anyone ever seen a man’s to do list – news flash – they don’t exist.
If you ask a man to do the same thing the first thing he is going to do is try and figure out who he can find to get it done.
The whole point is that the requestor may not care who does the task just that it gets done.
From this moment on don’t assume you have to do everything – which is why we always see women working and sometimes we get overwhelmed. We always seem so busy and have a lot to do and we never have time to network, meet new people or develop relationships because we are too busy and don’t have the time or even make the time.
This was one of my biggest mistakes when I started my career because you would think that the logical thing to do at work is WORK. Which is what I did. I still remember my mom saying go to work earlier than the boss leave later than the boss and don’t get the boss mad. Ok mom will do and thanks for that advice.
And if you do good work and keep your nose clean good things will happen, promotions and that sort of thing. Not exactly true.. Look don’t get me wrong I don’t want you showing up to work and spending your entire day talking to people and developing relationships, going to every event and becoming known by the senior people. What I am saying is manage your time and think about how you use it. Be more strategic with everything you do and always have the big picture in mind.
Here are several hacks you might want to try which allowed me to carve out time for me to not just be working– all were habits of mine and maybe they will work for you too.
1 - PUT YOURSELF ON YOUR CALENDAR
2 - DON’T CHECK EMAIL
3 - DON’T DO ANYTHING IN THE OFFICE YOU CAN DO AT HOME
Listen to the podcast for details.
The next episode in the Ladies Only season will be posted next week and will focus on networking, In the meantime please share and follow. I hope you are able to try out some of these hacks. Send me your comments or questions and until the next time and don’t forget to eat.
