In this inspiring episode of The Happy Somedays Podcast, we team up with Directions For Men to shine a spotlight on Men’s mental health and community support.
This episode will discuss themes surrounding mental health conditions and also discuss suicide. Please listen with caution if these issues are sensitive to you.
Our guest, Alan Shoreman, the facilitator of the Wythenshawe group, shares his journey and insights into the powerful impact of men's mental health support groups. Recorded once again at Wythenshawe Forum library’s Creative Space, Alan went through details including what to expect when someone joins a meeting, their holistic approach to mental health, how doing “little things” can add up to help you reset and find routine, the importance of involving families within someone’s recovery, and what to do and say if someone you know is showing signs of mental health issues. Alan also discloses his own journey to recovery with mental health, explaining how a dyslexia diagnosis was the key to him understanding his thoughts and feelings. He also explains how he helps others with dyslexia on the back of this.
Additionally, we discuss various mental health support lines available for those in need. From the Samaritans offering 24/7 support via 116 123 to Mind's support, Papyrus for the Prevention of Suicide in Young People and the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) helpline, we cover a range of resources that provide immediate help and guidance.
Listen in to hear Alan's inspiring stories and learn how Directions For Men is making a difference in the lives of many. Remember, it's OK not to be OK. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
