Episode 016 - James Mulvihill - Manager of Wythenshawe FC Women
Wythenshawe: A small town with a big football presence. We are blessed that there are so many local sides and incentives such as ours giving boys, girls, men and women a chance at grassroots level to get involved with the beautiful game. Recently, the men's sides at our semi-professional teams, Wythenshawe Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs (Now just Wythenshawe FC) were both promoted last season, too. It's a great time to be a fan and advocate of local football. The latter club, Wythenshawe FC, have had a revamp of sorts over the summer with a new chair in place in the shape of Sacha Lord, night time economy advisor for Greater Manchester. Sacha and the board at Wythenshawe FC have big plans for the club, and as part of this, investment and development of the women's team was high on the agenda. After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, a change in management was needed, and so they sourced a local lad who was more than willing to guide Wythenshawe FC towards success: James Mulvihill. Fresh from winning a league and cup double with FC United of Manchester, James joined the same time Sacha came on board and has quickly gotten to work making the women's team a force to be reckoned with. At the time of recording, the team was 6 wins from 6 in the league and had just won in the women's FA Cup 8-4...after being 3-0 down inside just 14 minutes! It hasn't all been plain sailing, though, as James explains within this episode. He chats to us about his new position, the teams amazing start to the season, how the club as a whole are giving back to the local community and the plans he and the board have to take the team forwards towards the ultimate goal of competing in the WSL. A big thanks to James for taking time out to record this, as well as all at Wythenshawe FC for their hospitality in letting us use the clubhouse to record this episode in If you'd like to be part of Happy Somedays in any way or if you'd like to know more about the sort of sessions we hold - including Men's and Women's football sessions, fitness classes, running, hiking or you just want to make new connections and lasting friendships, let us know and get in touch!
