ep 003. To surg or not to surg?
Join this week’s hosts, Joss, Jen, Quinn and Rebecka for an all new episode of The Gender Agenda! Tonight we cover a range of topics; from access to surgery, to international attention on the trans community. First the team begin with a chat about their weekends, highlights include Joss and Jen’s night out at beers for queers and Joss getting an opportunity to communicate in Auslan. Rebecka saw “I know what you did last summer” which inevitably leads the group on a tangent about Sarah Michelle Geller for some time. A segment emerges after some slight technical difficulties. Quinn is thrown into the raging waters of time and washes ashore with a memory of a recent night out seeing the first drag performer featured at ACCA, Kween Kong! After a break we ease into some deeper topics brought to us by Jen and Rebecka. Jen opens a conversation about a trans/intersex rally in Dublin with and incredible turnout, sighting it had more people in attendance than St Patricks Day and how heartwarming this was to see. Jen mentions Ireland still has some way to go however in terms of policy, as conversion practices are still not banned in all of Ireland. Rebecka ponders the group their thoughts on surgery, and an in depth discussion of access and what that looks like ensues. Rebecca bings up the progress Australia has made, referring back to policies that made gender recognition far more restricted in the past. Joss points out the paperwork side of things for her was less difficult that she imagined. Altogether though the group echoes the sentiment that primarily finances make access difficult, but also things like location and a lack of free time is still an invariable barrier to surgery for many trans people today. We wrap up with and interview by Joss with local artist, Local Sweetheart. They discuss being non binary and they beauty and community of finding an audience as a queer artist. Originally aired with music from trans/non binary artists alongside the conversation.
