EP43: From Public Buses to Smart Mobility: What’s Next for Transit

In this episode, host Daniel Perez welcomes John Andoh, an industry expert with 24 years of experience in public transit. As General Manager of the Redding Area Bus Authority (RABA), John discusses the evolution of transit systems, from traditional fixed routes to on-demand microtransit services like RABA’s "Runabout" program. The conversation also dives into zero-emission vehicle adoption, workforce development, and the future of transit innovation, including partnerships with ride-hailing companies and smart mobility initiatives.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

  • John Andoh’s Journey

  • The Shift to Microtransit

  • Zero-Emission Transit Strategy

  • Technology & Mobility Partnerships

  • The Future of Public Transit

Episode Highlights:

Microtransit is Reshaping Public TransportationRABA has replaced low-performing fixed routes with on-demand microtransit zones, providing riders with flexible and efficient service. Their Runabout service, powered by VIA, enables real-time ride requests via an app or phone, reducing wait times and improving accessibility.

The Road to Zero EmissionsWith California’s mandate for a 100% zero-emission transit fleet by 2040, RABA is strategically transitioning to battery-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. Hydrogen fuel offers a promising alternative for longer-distance travel, though infrastructure costs remain a challenge.

Training and Workforce Development MatterRABA is investing in workforce development programs through partnerships with local colleges, ensuring a pipeline of skilled operators and maintenance technicians. Recruiting and retaining transit employees is a priority, with a focus on fair compensation and job security.

Embracing Technology for Rider Experience and SafetySafety remains a top priority, with advanced monitoring systems, security cameras, and protective barriers for drivers. Microtransit technology, integrated bike and scooter-sharing, and partnerships with Uber expand mobility options beyond traditional bus routes.

What’s Next? The Future of Public TransitJohn envisions autonomous vehicles playing a bigger role within 15–20 years, although challenges remain in workforce transition and regulatory frameworks. Exciting partnerships with Bird Scooters, Uber, and bike-sharing programs help make transit more accessible and seamless for riders.
