Caroline Gabriel — affectionately known as 'Caroleen Canadeya' when she first arrived — spent her whole life in Canada and had only ever visited Egypt for about two weeks. Ever.
Suddenly, she found herself in med school in peak suburbia: Egypt’s 6th of October City.
A few years later, the same girl who barely spoke any Arabic was knee-deep in her emteyaz at Demerdash Hospital, dealing with the Egyptian medical system and its professionals.
Would you have given up at this point?
Yet, along the way, she’s picked up the language and fallen in love with the culture, and even become the tour guide for her Canadian-Egyptian friends when they come to visit.
