The Disappearance of Brandon Swanson

19-year-old Brandon Swanson called his parents for help after getting stuck in a ditch on a rural Minnesota road. For 47 minutes, they stayed on the phone as Brandon walked through dark farmland, trying to meet his parents at a safe location.

His last words were "Oh, shit!" before the line went dead. He vanished without a trace.

On May 14, 2008, Brandon left a party in Lynd, Minnesota, and drove toward home in Marshall. When his car slid into a roadside ditch, he called his father for assistance. But cell tower data later revealed Brandon wasn't where he thought he was - he was actually 25 miles away from his believed location.

During the 47-minute phone call, Brandon described walking through fields, climbing wire fences, and hearing running water nearby. His parents drove through Lynd searching for him, flashing their headlights while Brandon flashed his phone screen. Neither could see the other's signals.

Then Brandon encountered something in the darkness that made him exclaim in alarm. The call ended abruptly, and Brandon Swanson disappeared forever.

Despite one of the largest search operations in Minnesota history involving over 500 volunteers and 34 search dogs from 9 states, no trace of Brandon has ever been found. Search dogs tracked his scent for three miles to the Yellow Medicine River, where the trail vanished.

17 years later, Brandon Swanson's disappearance remains one of Minnesota's most baffling missing person cases. What happened during those final moments? What did Brandon see that made him cry out? And how does someone vanish completely from flat, open farmland?

The Crime Division examines the evidence, analyzes the timeline discrepancies, and explores the theories surrounding Brandon's mysterious disappearance.

Heaven's Gate Cult

Heaven's Gate Mass Suicide: The UFO Cult That Convinced 39 People to Die for a Spaceship

In March 1997, 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult were found dead in a mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California, in what remains one of the largest mass suicides in U.S. history. Led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, this UFO religious movement convinced intelligent, educated people to abandon their lives believing they would ascend to a spacecraft traveling behind the Hale-Bopp comet.

This episode explores the 22-year journey of Heaven's Gate from its origins as "The Two" in the 1970s to the tragic "graduation" that shocked the world. We examine Marshall Applewhite's transformation from a music teacher to cult leader, the group's extreme beliefs about gender, technology, and alien salvation, and how they recruited members through early internet websites.

The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart - Vanished over the Pacific

On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart climbed into her Lockheed Electra and took off from Lae, New Guinea, heading toward Howland Island — a narrow strip of land in the Pacific she never reached. Somewhere along that last leg, she vanished. No confirmed wreckage. No final message. Just silence.

This episode of Fobia retraces the timeline of that day — from her departure and last radio transmissions to the vast and chaotic search effort that followed. We look at what was known, what wasn’t, and how the official investigation struggled to make sense of her disappearance.

Over the years, a few theories have circulated. Some believe Earhart may have survived the flight and ended up as a castaway on Nikumaroro. Others claim she was captured by Japanese forces after a forced landing. But these ideas remain unproven. No verified wreckage, remains, or recordings ever closed the case.

In 1939, Earhart was declared legally dead in a U.S. court. Yet the fascination has never faded. Her name resurfaces regularly — in classified file dumps, in documentaries, and in grainy photos passed off as evidence. The mystery persists, not because of what we know, but because of everything we never found.

The Somerton Man: Unnamed Body on The Beach

In 1948, a man was found dead on Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia. Dressed neatly in a suit, no signs of struggle, no identification — just a small scrap of paper in his pocket with two words: Tamám Shud, or It Is Finished.

The case would become one of the most baffling mysteries of the 20th century. Who was he? Why was the label torn from his clothing? And what was the meaning behind the cryptic Persian phrase — “It is finished”?

Over the decades, the case has drawn cryptographers, coroners, and conspiracy theorists — but no answer has ever satisfied all the questions. DNA breakthroughs have offered new leads, but uncertainty still lingers.

This episode explores the final moments, the code, and the endless speculation around the man who remains, in many ways, a ghost on the shore.

Dyatlov Pass incident

In 1959, nine experienced Soviet hikers set out to cross the icy slopes of the Ural Mountains. What followed became one of the most chilling unsolved mysteries in modern history: the Dyatlov Pass incident.

Days later, their campsite was found abandoned — tents slashed from the inside, belongings untouched. The bodies were discovered scattered in the snow, half-dressed, some with horrific internal injuries, others with crushed skulls, missing eyes and tongues, but no signs of struggle. What could have caused such terror?

Was it a deadly avalanche, military testing gone wrong, or something far more unexplainable?

In this episode of Fobia, we investigate the timeline, the official theories, and the many chilling questions that remain about the unsolved deaths of the Dyatlov Pass hikers — a case that still haunts true crime, mystery, and paranormal investigators to this day.
