In today's episode of The Farm Team podcast I am honored to be joined by the owner and head trainer at the Taber, Alberta Pro Performance Athletic Center, Joel Mills. In the past 15 months Joel has once again been battle tested and has been dealt a hand that nobody can play. He and his staff were forced to close the doors and he provided a heart-felt message to his clients that he will be back as soon as possible. Knowing Joel and the positive impact he has in Taber you can guarantee he will be back, and he will continue his life’s work of creating healthier and happier members of his community. Joel and the entire Mills family is deeply rooted throughout Southern Alberta and he has proven to be one of the most prominent boxers to come out of Western Canada. Joining his first boxing gym at age 9 Joel went on to compile an amatuer record of 85 wins and 20 losses. In 2004 and 2005 Joel became a National Champion and competed in several international tournaments representing Canada. In 2006 Joel moved to Los Angeles where he turned pro at the age of 18. While in LA Joel trained under the legendary boxing trainer Justin Fortune and was a member of Manny Pacquio’s camp. The 5’10” super middleweight retired from international professional boxing with an incredible record of 9 wins, 3 wins coming by way of knockout, 3 losses, and 1 draw. In 2017 he celebrated his last professional bout with a win at the Taber Recreation Center in front of a capacity crowd of his hometown fans. A life-long dream accomplished. Joel’s journey to where he is at now is extremely compelling and something I sincerely look forward to learning more about. By nature, humans are deeply wired to avoid pain and will do so at all costs so understanding the psychology and mindset of a boxer entering the ring is fascinating. There is no better person to have on the show to talk about the intricacies of preparing yourself to go head-first into battle.
