Natasha Myers is a Plant Listener and Canadian anthropologist whose incredible writing might have just changed the very direction my work with plants took at a critical moment 4 years ago. She doesn't actually appear in this episode due to personal reasons, so I'm reading out her epic article 'How to Grow Liveable Worlds: 10 not-so-easy steps for life in the Planthropocene'. With her full permission, of course. I've modified it slightly and added my own thoughts and interpretations. Natasha

In this episode, I chat with Hayley Agnew, a mischievous wearer of mismatched earrings, who is also a naturopath, Bowen therapist & yoga teacher and thrives on human and nature connection. She loves, lives & works in regional South Australia and weaves her magic from her clinic 'Our Healing Place'.
Hayley and I chat about self care being a responsibility to ourselves that requires a loving discipline and a belief in ourselves being worthy of care. And meeting the resistance that often arises when we’re building a new way of being.
Hayley shares her deep connection with Rose and the beautiful wisdom this plant has shared with her throughout her life about healthy boundaries and renewal and strength.
Another favourite Hayley speaks about is Shatavari, traditionally a special women’s herb- I love her take on the more energetic aspects of this plant.
We bring in Motherwort and Calendula and circle back to a more in depth dive into Rose medicine.
There’s so many gems in this one, I can’t wait for you to listen in!

Here are the themes that are emerging in the Sacred Herbalism Conversation:
1) Sacred Herbalism is a method for cultural repair
2) Plants are collaborators, not commodities
3) Plants have an intelligence and an awareness that we can communicate with and hear through deep listening.
4) Many of us are seeking healing beyond the physical; plants can help us not only heal trauma but support the healing of soul wounds through their deeper lessons.
5) This conversation is often happening at the edge of language; since many of these ideas do not easily belong in our culture, holding them and exploring them requires creative 're-languaging'
Thanks for being here!

From the kitchens and gardens of permaculture homes to the rainforests of the Daintree, from conscious conception to community food security, each guest has brought their wisdom on how plants, people, and place are deeply interconnected.
This episode revisits 12 powerful discussions that explored themes of resilience, herbal medicine, regenerative farming, local food systems, water innovation, and the soulful work of tending both our inner and outer landscapes.
Together, these stories remind us that healing ourselves and healing the Earth are inseparable—and that by aligning with nature, we can create thriving, abundant futures.
Tune in for a recap of the year’s highlights and a celebration of the common threads that inspire us to grow, connect, and regenerate.

Join me, Tatiana Dawn, as I share about my journey on the herbal education segment over the last solar cycle. It is The Elder Tree podcasts third birthday tomorrow!!! So proud of our team and I love my herbal education segment and the wonderful wisdom keepers who join me on here to share their stories and knowledge.
I somehow managed to record and air this episode amongst the chaos of getting a grant in for The Elder Tree (submitted today) organising our upcoming sociocracy training (dates locked in), writing a massive newsletter for The Elder Tree spring equinox tomorrow, recording and editing the bonus group episode being launched on our podcast third birthday tomorrow, annnnd when I sat down to record this I get a call that a truck has arrived to The Elder Tree medicine gardens to deliver bark mulch so 2 minutes later I was flying out the door, Hence this episode arriving now live online in the evening. phew what a day.
In the recording, I actually forgot to mention one thing that happened this year- Cat Green from Everyday Empowered and Herbfest, reached out a herbal helping hand and offered to record an episode while I was moving interstate- what a legend.
I would love to hear feedback and ideas for the next leg of the journey.... who would you like to see interviewed on here? What direction would you like my herbal education segment to take? This is here for you!!!

Monica Francia (she/her) is a Naturopath based in lutruwita / Tasmania. She is a consulting Naturopath, medicine maker, Teacher and Medicinal Herb Farmer at her small scale organic and biodynamic herb farm - Hop Valley Herb Farm. She is also the Coordinator for Herbalists Without Borders Hobart, a non-profit providing accessible health care in nipaluna / Hobart and surrounds.
In this episode we dive into a many layered topic that feels really important - how we can avoid the commodification of herbs. Seeing plants as commodities is almost imporssible to avoid, when we live in a world that is steeped in capitalist views of nature, and evenmoreso when our livelihoods are based on selling herbs in some for or other. Is this something you think about? What do you do in your plant walk that helps you move away from planet as commodity and towards plant as living being, teacher, ally or friend?
Herbal commodities are virtually the opposite of sacred herbalism; it feels pertinent that we’ve unpacked a few layers of this here.
Let me know your thoughts!
For all our patron subscribers, Monica has gifted you all a super useful, clear and concise e-book on medicine making that she has created for her in person workshops and I love it! Today is an exciting day for the Australian herbal community, as Naomi Ingleton launches Herb Connect, an online marketplace and hub to connect herb growers to apothecaries, medicine makers, practitioners and anyone wanting fresh vital potent Australian herbs!
Naomi Ingleton is herb farmer and educator who’s spent her life working with food and plants. After years in hospitality, food production, and business advisory, she’s come full circle to her roots — founding The Farmacy Collective and Herb Connect to support farmers, share her love of medicinal plants, and inspire communities to grow and use herbs for food, health, and connection.Herb Connect — a platform that links Australian herb growers large and small with buyers who want fresh, local, and trusted herbs.
Naomi started Herb Connect to support farmers with diverse income streams and to give consumers access to herbs with real provenance, not imports of unknown origin. It is at the tender beginning- Naomi has developed the framework but what we need is for all the small, medium and large scale growers to sign up and start selling their fresh/freshly dried herbs.
This is not a space for herbal preps such as tinctures/infused oils/salves- it is purely for fresh material. Farmers/Growers can list their herbs and can have a bio so that you know exactly who you are buying from. And then the practitioners/medicine makers/retail outlets can also put up their 'wants' to give the farmers more direction in what to grow.
The website will also be a hub, linking herb farmers to mentorship and other support. There is a real momentum happening, for Australia to become more self sufficient in our herb supply, and it's a momentum that The Elder Tree is really backing this momentum, and forming alliances with people like Naomi Ingleton is a wonderful way to actualise this momentum.

You'll never get over your trauma with talking unless you also heal the nervous system and get more connected to self, community and earth. Plants and embodiment can help you feel safe in your body again.
In this episode of Sacred Herbalism, Stephanie Hazel sits down with Daisy K. Devine to unravel the intimate ties between trauma, the nervous system, and herbal medicine. They reveal how trauma is stored and released through the body, why the gut—our “second brain”—is vital to healing, and how deep community connection fuels recovery. With insights from Taoist philosophy and decades of herbal wisdom, Daisy highlights the healing power of passionflower and reishi, inviting listeners to see nature as a sanctuary for emotional restoration.
Key Takeaways:
Trauma releases only through the body, not just the mind.
Healing thrives on loving presence and community.
Nervous and digestive systems work together in trauma recovery.
Herbs like passionflower and reishi help regulate the nervous system and support the gut.
Nature offers safety and a path to emotional integration.

Sasha London-Welker is a farmer and the owner of Green Goddess Farm, North of Kyogle in northern NSW. She’s been growing Certified Organic fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs for the last 15 years and is passionate about growing food for her community while honoring the soil, insects, birds and the wild plants who share the land she farms. I first met Sasha at Lismore Organic Farmers market, where her stall was always overflowing with the most vibrant produce. Recently, Sasha has begun to deep dive into all aspects of medicinal herbs starting from the growing process all the way to making high quality herbal medicine.
We begin this episode with a special memory from Sasha’s childhood that really sparked her love of herbs. She paints a beautiful picture of collecting Nettle in the spring with her family in the mountains of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sasha remembers delicious pots of Nettle and cups of Nettle tea. And surprisingly few stings! Apparently Aussie Nettle is much fiercer in the sting department!
While in the beginning Sasha was farming organic veggies, herbs crept in as cut flowers and then more intentionally as she used them to support her own health. Calendula was an early ally for her beautiful skin healing properties. Sasha shares a special experience with Nettle on her land, where she sat in communication with the herb and was then inspired to pivot and really lean into medicinal herb growing and herbal medicine making. During our chat she shares her experiences of growing and making medicine from so many special herbs, including Milky Oats, Echinacea, Chamomile and Californian poppy.
We chat about the impact of working in farming on health and Sasha shares the difficulty of achieving balance. She works outside in the sunshine on an organic farm with beautiful produce to fuel herself but also has to be careful about boundaries and listening to her body when she needs rest- admitting it’s easy to overwork when you live at your work and feel so passionate about it. She shares working more deeply with particular herbs has been a big support.
This is such a juicy episode, Sasha’s passion for organic growing and her love of herbal medicine is infectious and inspiring!

Christopher Smith from Tinderry Mountain Herbs, is an extraordinary person doing some really important work in the herbal community in Australia.
Christopher is a herbalist, horticulturalist and herbal educator who draws on over 40 years of horticultural experience to grow a line of rare and endagered herbs at the herb farm he runs called Tinderry Mountain Herbs, at Tinderry Mountain near Canberra. These herbs are supplied to herbalists in Australia, and Christopher has the noble vision of assisting Australia to become self-sufficient with it's herb supply- in particular Arnica, Goldenseal and Solomons Seal. This is a vision that we both share and are actioning in our own ways.
Christopher is passionate about sharing the world of plants and medicinal herbs with people. He runs regular workshops and classes through the Heirophant in Canberra teaching people how to make an array of herbal preparations. He also runs online workshops and classes, and has a potent online offering called the Herbology Hub. Check out the shownotes for his offerings.
In this conversation, we explore the diverse pathways within herbal medicine, emphasizing the importance of community, curiosity, and the non-linear journey of becoming a herbalist. We talk about the need for various niches in the herbal field, the significance of growing and guardianship of medicinal herbs, and the creation of a supportive ecosystem for herbalists. We discuss the value of unique experiences and the importance of fostering connections within the herbal community.
Random fact- the last time I interviewed Christopher, the episode was released on the Autumn Equinox (2023) and this time, this episode is released only a few days after the Winter Solstice!

Amber Alekhamis is a qualified naturopathic herbalist (BHSc), certified in iridology and flower essences. Her work and life revolve around being in reverie with nature and advocating for us as people to be in a reciprocal relationship with the earth. She continues to try to always be a proponent for traditional practices of Naturopathy and to be guided by the light of nature. Amber lives in the Northern Rivers of NSW with her husband, where she runs her small business known as From The Eartha.
During this episode, Amber shares how an upbringing steeped in the philosophy of nature connection alongside a childhood living on the wild islands off the coast of Western Australia heavily influenced her belief systems and the way that she practices and connects with herbal medicine today.
Amber’s passionate about keeping alive the traditions and constitutional approaches of early naturopathic founders- focussing on the whole person, rather than reducing someone to their symptoms.
She uses herbal oils as a way of deepening her connection to herbal medicine, but also as a beautifully gentle introduction to using herbs for those that are new to plant medicine. Helping her clients experience the potency and effectiveness of plants in a way that asks them to slow down and use all their senses.
I loved chatting with Amber about two often overlooked herbs- Chamomile and Comfrey and the way she uses these in her herbal oils.
This is a beautiful nature infused chat which I think you’re going to love!
