Hello and welcome to our podcast, The Doula & The Doc hosted by Vanessa Salerno, a birth and postpartum doula, as well as Dr. Joseph Sgroi, an obstetrician gynaecologist and fertility specialist. Together we'll be discussing a range of topics from pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. Together we combine holistic insights and medical expertise as we dive into women's and men's health with honest information and sometimes unexpected conversations. This podcast is where evidence meets experience so let's start the conversation.

Dr Joseph Sgroi is a qualified private obstetrician, gynaecologist and IVF fertility specialist in East Melbourne. Dr Joseph and his team provide holistic medical care to support women’s health and wellbeing during pregnancy, childbirth, fertility and women’s health.

Vanessa is a modern day birth and postpartum doula who, alongside Joe, creates a more innovative approach to obstetric care for women, men, and families.

More Than Just a Period: Understanding Your Cycle

In this episode of The Doula and The Doc, we're diving deep into everything your health teacher didn’t tell you about your menstrual cycle. From what's normal to what's not, Dr. Joe and Ness unpack the signs, symptoms, and secrets of your cycle that every person deserves to understand.

We bust some major myths—like whether getting your period young means early menopause and if tampons are really as bad as TikTok says. Plus, we explore why your period is so much more than just an inconvenience—it's a powerful window into your overall health.

We also get real about the unspoken stuff: discharge changes, bleeding on contraception, irregular cycles, Mirena mysteries, and how to handle pain without being dismissed.

And of course, Dr. Joe takes on your burning questions in our listener Q&A, from painful sex and PMDD to post-miscarriage cycles and what it means when you’ve had discharge for ages but no period yet.

This one’s packed with knowledge, compassion, and the kind of straight-up info we all wish we had sooner.
