Episode 4: Management of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that significantly affects the lives of people and their families. While the definitive trigger of type 2 diabetes is your body's resistance to insulin, a combination of factors usually increases your risk of that resistance occurring. Clinical management of diabetes and teaching patients diabetes self-management skills are necessary for optimal type 2 diabetes control. Type 2 diabetes can be managed, and in some cases, reversed. Type 2 diabetes mellitus consists of an array of dysfunctions characterized by hyperglycemia and resulting from the combination of resistance to insulin action, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. The goals in caring for patients with diabetes mellitus are to eliminate symptoms and to prevent, or at least slow, the development of complications. This CME series is dedicated to strengthening and improving primary care practitioners' clinical knowledge and skills as they serve, support, and deliver care to patients with type 2 diabetes.
