Ema Shin is a Melbourne-based artist who was born and raised in Niigata, Japan. After studying printmaking at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Ema completed a Master of Fine Art Degree at Aichi University of the Arts in Aichi, Japan. Her recent solo exhibition, Hearts of Absent Women, is a celebration of the lives and energy of anonymous women refracted through personal experiences with her own culture as well as Australian society. Her inter-disciplinary practice, application of historical techniques, and use of tactile materials result in contemporary artworks that express femininity and sexuality through embroidery, three-dimensional fabric sculptures, tapestry, and printmaking. Over the span of her career, Ema has exhibited prolifically in Australia and in various other countries around the world.
