THACO and Things Four friends playing old-school D&D...   Hi Everyone, And Welcome to THACO and Things, a light-hearted actual-play dungeons and dragons campaign using the old Dungeons and Dragons original basic set and the Cyclopedia.  It’s many years since two of us used the system, and for others it’s new, so if you want to listen to a group of characters and players that are having fun then you’ve come to the right place. A quick thanks to www.Syrinscape.com for some of the great sound effects we’ve used. We have Anthony playing Koros the Halfling, another Anthony playing Jeffrey the Cleric , Kieron is playing Yulendro the Elf and Greylock the NPC dwarf is being played by Dan the DM.  In Basic, the playable demi-human races are both Race AND Class, for example Elves are a type of Warrior-Wizard hybrid, they can’t be Thieves, or Clerics and so on.  Humans alone can learn and develop as they wish, and can choose either Cleric, Fighter, Thief or Magic User. This first episode starts as characters are still being finalised, and we join the party in Starry Lake Town.  It’s a warm, balmy evening, and they gaze across the lake to the dark ruins that lay hidden in the darkness.  What could possibly go wrong ?? The Companions - Series One, Episode 6 - Frontal Assault Part 1   Intelligence from Jax indicates that the building Northeast of Tanners Square is one of the safe houses used by Cray.  Cray is setting up a thief and assassins guild in Illem and 'for the sake of the city' - but also in all likelihood his own business - Jax has sent the Companions to destroy those within, in return of which they will get information for their own quest. The Inquisitors of Illem - S1E3 Canon and Damien continue to search for the whereabouts of the Heretical Book. They track down Harot's wife Betty, and meet his son Eric, but the only clue they find is that in his journal Harot came back from a guard mission for Ambassador Conrattle and was spending golds instead of coppers or silvers when placing bets on football matches. They then go to keep their appointment with Guardsman 3rd Class Reef and discuss the merits of when, where and how they will undertake their instructions in that regard. They narrowly miss being sent to the astral plane... Music and sound effects are either by the excellent www.syrinscape.com or in-house. EPISODE 15 (!)   Callisto the Human Monk, Carmak the Dragonborn Battlemaster, and Parrel the Human Rogue have evaded capture from the guards above by falling down a 60-foot deep abandoned well that has since been transformed into a pit trap with big spikes at the bottom.  Quick thinking and reflexes by Parrel saw him manage to get a prepared grappling hook and rope out in time, and they broke through a wall into an old natural tunnel that after some trials led them under the building, across an underground lake inhabited by blind piranha, and onwards to discover something they weren't expecting, illusory walls, and some personages they have a grudge against. Episode 14 – An Attack from the Rear goes Downwards Having decided on a course of action that sees them agreeing to stay in the city of Illem, the group splits into two for a double-pronged attack on a house that Jax’ intelligence says is one of the hideouts being used by Cray’s thief and assassins guild.    The attack on the rear is to include Carmac the Dragonborn Blademaster, Leaf’n Twig the Firbolg Ranger, and a couple of extras sent by Jax namely Callisto the Monk and Paroll the Rogue.  Unfortunately Leaf’n Twig is ill, leaving just three of them... and things swiftly go in an unexpected direction.    The group does find out some startling information, and also Carmac has to quickly dissemble when two names from The Companions past pop up...     Many thanks for listening, your likes, thoughts and comments really mean a lot to us.  Or why not just pop by our official Twitter account @PaperSwordPod for a chat ? :)

Hi, This Special takes the place of the E13 slot.  It's a really good listen, it's funny and gives an insight into how the players got into DnD (or D&D if you're feeling 'old school' !), what influenced them to make their characters to be as they are and then we have the beginnings of a chat about THAC0 (will continue the rest of that chat in the next special about Talking DnD).   THAC0 = To Hit AC (Armour Class) Zero.  It's from the older versions of DnD. There's a little bit of history which Anthony talks about from a previous version of DnD and his character Silverthorn, and one of his favourite memories.  Personally, from that previous campaing one of my favourite parts was the red dragon...
