What’s the best that could happen?
The beginning of a new year is typically a moment when people look ahead and set goals or intentions for the next 12 months.
We envision new possibilities and feel into the hope and joy that it brings us. As the excitement of this settles in though, the brain does something VERY interesting…
It imagines all the possible worst-case scenarios.
(insert sad trombone noise - womp womp womp)
It imagines all the ways you could fail and make a fool of yourself.
And it comes up with reasons why this idea isn’t as good as you initially thought and that you should give up this silly fantasy.
Can you relate?
If so, you’re not alone!
As humans, we all have this negative bias that views uncertainty as a potential threat.
And as healthcare professionals, we have been trained to audit for errors and possible problems.
Therefore when we combine the two, it often leads to imagining the worst-case scenarios whenever we envision going after a new goal, habit, or anything that’s outside our comfort zone.
Fortunately, we can train our minds to overcome the fears and doubts created by these thoughts and redirect our brains to consider the best-case scenario so that we can move forward to the kind of life we deeply desire.
Enjoy Season 2’s finale episode, and I’ll see you in the springtime!
