The Hope Diamond, Part I

For Part I of the Hope Diamond's episode, we break down the fascinating facts about the world-renowned Hope Diamond, leaving all the myths and tea for part two. Known for its deep blue color, the Hope Diamond weighs 45.52 carats and originated from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India. Discovered in the 17th century, it was initially a larger stone weighing 112 carats, known as the Tavernier Blue.

The diamond's journey took a royal turn when it was sold to King Louis XIV of France in 1668 and became part of the French Crown Jewels. After being re-cut, it became known as the French Blue, weighing 67.125 carats.

By 1839, the diamond appeared in the possession of British banker and gem collector Henry Philip Hope, from whom it gets its current name. The diamond was re-cut again into its present form to enhance its brilliance, resulting in the 45.52-carat gem we know today. Its stunning blue color is due to trace amounts of boron within the diamond.

Throughout its history, it has been owned by notable figures such as Louis XIV, King George IV of the United Kingdom, and the Hope family. So join us as we delve into the true history of the Hope Diamond, exploring its origins, transformations, and illustrious ownership. And why, once again, stealing diamonds from religious figures is never a good option.
