With over a third of our lives spent at work, not doing what we love for a living makes little sense. Yet so few do. When asked, eight out of ten people said that they would not return to their places of work if they were given a million pounds. How do we then bridge the gap between the two extremes: happy but broke at one end, wealthy but miserable at the other? in modern times, is it really possible to enjoy meaningful, heart lifting work that also turns a decent wage or profit? This is what we investigate. Welcome to the Buddhist Millionaire Podcast.

Conversations with Buddhist Millionaires: with David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK

My guest today is David Shelley, CEO of Hachette UK, a publishing behemoth.

David is an anomaly. He is one of the rare few who run their ‘executive ships’ more like a Buddhist Millionaire than a ‘cut-throat suit’.

David came onto my radar when Hachette UK bought out ‘Short Books UK’ the company that published ‘How to be a Buddhist Millionaire- 9 practical steps to being happy in a materialist world.’

It was an end-of-year email sent to all Hachette staff and authors that made me realise not only was David not your typical ‘publishing boss’, but a one of a kind, considered, compassionate individual with both professional focus and a strong business moral code.

I didn’t expect the CEO of one of the largest publishing houses in the world to respond to my e-mail. Honestly, I thought a scary PA would intercept it and politely decline my podcast interview request on ‘Mr Shelley’s’ behalf.

I was wrong.

And this episode is the outcome.

Lots of love.
