Our guest on this podcast episode is Karen Hall, who is a breastfeeding counsellor, writer and podcaster. Karen regularly discusses issues around pregnancy, birth and early parenthood and most recently she published her first book, ‘Why Mixed Feeding Matters’. 

We begin our conversation looking at what we mean by the term mixed feeding and how it can carry different meanings within different cultures. We look at the reasons why families choose to mix feed - whether out of necessity or as a lifestyle choice. Throughout this episode we talk about the importance of seeking good breastfeeding support and understanding the pros and cons that can come with mixed feeding.

As well as highlighting some of the potential drawbacks of breastfeeding, Karen also explains how mixed feeding can help a mother continue breastfeeding. She says: “Many people will continue breastfeeding alongside using formula - whether that is something they positively decided before the baby was born or whether it was something they were advised to do by health professionals."
