In today's episode, I do a deep dive into probiotics and whether or not you should take them if you are dealing with IBS or SIBO.
This is a topic of controversy, as many believe that you should NOT add more bacteria if you are already dealing with a bacterial overgrowth. However, in this episode we go over what the science actually says so you can feel more confident moving forward.
STUDIES REFERENCED:
✅ Collective resolution rate of SIBO with probiotics was 53% which was comparable to that observed in a meta-analysis on antibiotics for SIBO which was 51% (2017 meta-analysis summarizing 18 RCT’s)

✅ Saccharomyces boullardi (10 billion CFU) led to an 83% resolution rate of SIBO (2022 RCT)

✅ Saccharomyces boullardi (10 billion CFU) combined with low FODMAP diet led to a 40% resolution of SIBO in 2 weeks (2023 clinical trial)

✅ Lacto + bifido blend (5 billion CFU) 24-40% resolution or improvement rate in SIBO in 4 weeks compared to controls (2014 RCT)

Spore-based probiotics (bacillus clausii - 6 billion CFU) led to 47% resolution rate in SIBO, which is comparable to many antibiotics (2009 study)
