🎙️🇺🇸 The BMS Podcast #1 with Jason Haxton 🇺🇸 | The Dr AT Still, MD, DO intercultural Vision on healthcare

🎙️Podcast episode description

🌎 Todays guest is Jason Haxton, MA, who has been the Director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, MO (USA) for the past 22 years.

🎯 Jason will talk to us about Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917). Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), was the founder of the osteopathic profession and a visionary who saw the cross-cultural potential of healthcare while living and working on the rural American frontier in the 19th century. As an American physician who interacted with Native American populations (the Shawnees at the Wakarusa mission in Kansas), he became aware of their healing principles and created osteopathy as a unique healing system. AT Still combined spirit-based healing wisdom inherited from traditional/complementary and alternative medicine and Western scientific-based healing wisdom and the several influences he has received when he founded the osteopathic medical profession.

🎯 Together, we’ll discuss the origin of the body-mind-spirit osteopathic tenet and how it may be interpreted differently depending on diverse sociocultural health assumptions. While this approach does not belong to mainstream Western care, the « spirit » component of the body-mind-spirit osteopathic tenet may guide practitioners to provide person-centered and culturally sensitive care.

The Museum of Osteopathic Medicine  has been recently nationally accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the premier accrediting body for museums in the U.S. AAM accreditation brings national recognition to the museum for its commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, fewer than 1,100 are currently accredited. Director Jason Haxton, MA, and the Museum’s dedicated team completed a long, rigorous 2-year process that examined all aspects of their operations. AAM granted accreditation to the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine in summer 2022.
