BGC #4: What is Power?

"Welcome to The Black Gentlemen’s Club Podcast, a space where we have open and candid conversations about the challenges Black Men face and how we can overcome them. In this episode, our hosts Coach J, Mac, Loki, and Corderro delve into the deep and significant topic of the "What is Power?" along with a comprehensive exploration of the concept of power.

We begin by reflecting on our previous discussion on the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, and we invite our listeners to share their insights and self-discoveries. We traverse through the many facets of power, from physical force, wealth, state action, social norms, ideas, to the power of numbers. We also discuss various types of social power, including reward, coercive, referent, legitimate, expert, and informational power.

We continue by exploring the concept of influence and its various forms and methods, including persuasion, collaboration, inspiration, and consultation. We then turn the conversation towards the influence of culture on power dynamics, with examples from the music and film industry, and how values can shape this type of influence over the mind. We explore potential strategies to counteract this influence, discuss the sphere of influence, and reflect on the parable of the sower (Luke 8:5-18).

As we conclude, we introduce our next Black Gentlemen's Club Book Assignment: "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie and "48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene. Our community call to action is to take a step back and assess if you are positively using your power and observe if someone is using theirs to influence you negatively.
