About Guest - Matthew Birch
After completing a diploma in Financial Management at BCIT in Vancouver Matthew went on to complete the CMA designation as a Certified Management Accountant in 2004. Working in both public and private companies Matthew worked his way up through the ranks within the accounting profession earning senior management positions as a Corporate Controller in the equipment industry, the construction industry and the oil and gas industry.
During his time as a corporate controller Matthew came to understand that while tax accounting may be a necessity, Management Accounting, which is the ability for a business to relate the monthly financial performance to that of the businesses operational performance, is just as necessary, if not more so, and yet in the business community Management Accounting is wildly undervalued.
In 2019 Matthew left his role as a Corporate Controller to take on a business development role with Birch Accounting, a bookkeeping business built for the purpose of providing monthly financial insight to the small business community (Under $5M in annual revenue). The introduction of management accounting to this small business community that has traditionally only viewed the accounting profession as tax preparers or data entry clerks has already started to make an impact, helping business owners learn the impact of their decisions throughout the year rather than when they file their taxes.
