Kerri Van Arsdale, Autoimmune Health Coach, Ep 47, The power of herbalism and nutrition to heal Autoimmune Disease

After a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis at 25 years old, Kerri embarked on a mission to heal herself.

Through 7 years of health research exploring how inflammation affects our body’s systems, Kerri has transformed her life and the lives of others from illness into wellness.

Kerri teaches the science and techniques for proactive health. Through the integration of a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet, detoxification protocols, and self-care practices, Kerri’s passion is to activate our body’s innate ability to heal and thrive. Kerri incorporates her love of herbalism, the potency of plant medicine, and regenerative farming practices into her curriculum.

In her early 20s, Kerri was living the good life and enjoying herself without a care in the world.  A dream trip to Mexico backpacking for 1.5 months led to 5 days in hospital with a Typhoid fever and ICU for 5 days. Kerri was grateful to survive, however over the next few years she saw many doctors in an attempt to get to the bottom of her unexplainable symptoms which was a very difficult time for her.

Finally, with the help of a Functional Medical Doctor, she was able to put the pieces together and this led to an MS diagnosis at age 25.

I asked Kerri what resilience means to her, and she said it meant not giving up, persevering and using our challenges as a vehicle to transform our lives.

Mindset

We can get stuck in fear and a negative loop. Kerri avoids this replacing it with walks in nature, cooking, meditation and mindfulness, connection and rituals that help her to relax and destress. Kerri also enjoys crafts, art and making things with her hands.

Feeling safe

How do we feel safe after past stress and trauma? The answer is, how do we open our hearts again after it has shut down from stress? How we talk to ourselves is key and it is important to reflect daily on how kind we are to ourselves via our inner dialogue.

Mind - Body - Food - Energetic

Mindset, nutrition and exercise are imperative to promote healing and repair in our minds and bodies. Our energy is also important and it is why I loved this conversation as it is often missed. Energy is everything and having a good flow in our energy systems, meridians and chakras matters. Our energy is connected to our bodies physically, our posture, our muscles, bones, facia and skeletal system. Our energy is also connected to our hormones, digestion, and emotions.

When we eat better, we feel better and Kerri says that eating nutrient-dense food inspired by Dr Terry Wahl’s protocol made an enormous difference in her recovery. Kerri also loves the power of herbalism. Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine or phytomedicine, refers to using a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalism has a long tradition of use outside conventional medicine.

Kerri’s tips:

  • Breathe, move, detox.
  • Cook, fall in love with the power of herbs.
  • Love yourself, be present.
