4. Nature of Thai language: some cases, don’t say “For” in Thai
The word “FOR” in Thai you can use in various words in Thai language namely: hai (ให้), samrab (สำหรับ), puea (เพื่อ). It is used in different contexts to refer to “For”. But when “for” in the context that is related to “period of time” you spend to do something, in Thai language we use “Bpen velaa (เป็นเวลา) to refer to FOR” in formal way/writing version….. But in casual way/daily life conversation Thais just “SKIP the word FOR in the sentences” So, if you want to say “I lived in Bangkok for 7 years = Pom yoo tee Krungthep 7 bpee (ผมอยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ 7 ปี) …… In term of showing that you still have been doing something now and maybe still happen in the future, you can just “add the word “LAEW แล้ว” at the end of sentences. For example, “I have been living in Bangkok for 7 years = Pom yoo tee Krungthep 7 Bpee LAEW (ผมอยู่ที่กรุงเทพฯ 7 ปี แล้ว) ….. visit our website www.btthai.net
