Banality is the whole point of life. Discover golden nuggets in banality with us. We are Nepalese immigrants living in the US, immigrated to the US for graduate school and latched ourselves into this hodgepodge of a society. Our story is quite trivial, hence the name Banal. The attention economy is not conducive to mundane experiences of people, but we feel quite the opposite. We (as in you the reader and us the hosts) heard same old stories growing up, had similar trails and tribulations. Most importantly, we are shaped by a set of common, not so interesting experiences but somehow we are oblivious to the fact these prosaic endeavors are what matter the most in life. To that end, discovering and highlighting golden nuggets in intuitively uninspiring stories of people is the whole point of this little experiment of ours. We encourage you to engage with us and live vicariously through our episodes.

The CONVERSATION: About #Academics and #NepaleseFootball (Ft. Dr. Rohan Benjankar)

For this episode of the podcast, we bring you a conversation with Dr. Rohan Benjankar, an associate professor of civil engineering at the Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (SIUE), Illinois. Dr. Benjankar got his PhD from the University of Idaho and has been with SIUE since 2017. Apart from being a researcher/academic, Dr. Benjankar is also a big soccer enthusiast and used to play for the Friends Club during the nineties.

This conversation has three major segments: 1. General trends of civil engineering research/academics and Dr. Benjankar’s experience with it 2. Nepalse football and Dr. Benjankar’s journey in Nepalse football 3. Overall cultural trends in Nepali politics. The individual segments are timestamped, feel free to jump into the specific section of your interest.

We venture into many aspects of the aforementioned topics, like what was the Football scene like in Nepal during the 90s, what is a professor’s view of Nepalese graduate students and why do we struggle with research coming from Nepal. This episode is a fun one, we hope you will enjoy it.
