The Banal Podcast

Banality is the whole point of life. Discover golden nuggets in banality with us. We are Nepalese immigrants living in the US, immigrated to the US for graduate school and latched ourselves into this hodgepodge of a society. Our story is quite trivial, hence the name Banal. The attention economy is not conducive to mundane experiences of people, but we feel quite the opposite. We (as in you the reader and us the hosts) heard same old stories growing up, had similar trails and tribulations. Most importantly, we are shaped by a set of common, not so interesting experiences but somehow we are oblivious to the fact these prosaic endeavors are what matter the most in life. To that end, discovering and highlighting golden nuggets in intuitively uninspiring stories of people is the whole point of this little experiment of ours. We encourage you to engage with us and live vicariously through our episodes.

The Contrast: A Researcher in Motion (Ft. Khem Raj Giri)

For this episode, we have a fun and interesting conversation with Khem Raj Giri, a postdoctoral researcher at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Khem got his undergraduate in Bio Chemistry from Pokhara University and went to Finland to pursue a masters in protein since and biotechnology at the  University of Oulu. After Finland, khem went to ONIRIS, France for his PhD. This podcast primarily revolves around comparing and contrasting Khem’s experience in Europe vs. America and somewhere in between.

We talk about many aspects of education and life in Europe vs. America, some of the cultural differences and scholarship opportunities for international students in both continents. While there are many differences, there are similarities as well. Primarily, our goal is to demonstrate the differences between the two continents and what life is like for international students in the pair.

There are many chitchats / segues into interesting experiences of Khem and the hosts in the episode as well.
