Max Vertsappen was unheaded on his way to the Japanese Grand Prix after a stunning qualifying lap set him on the path to victory.

McLaren mucked it up, though. It missed the chance to undercut with Lando Norris and then left him to waddle around an unthreatening distance from Verstappen while the faster Oscar Piastri wanted a crack.
