Improving Personal Performance: Influencing Styles - Directing

In today's Blog, we take a deeper look at the first influencing style (in no particular order) - Directing. It is worth mentioning at this point that there is no one style that is better than the other. Rather choose and deploy a style based on the situation you find yourself in.

The directing influence style is a push type. It involves asserting a position and giving information in a directive manner and usually takes the form of an order, command or statement. It is authoritative and must be clear, concise and direct. This influence style appeals to the head, meaning it is rationally driven rather than emotionally driven. First you will need to evaluate the situation, then state what is required by prescribing, demanding or imposing certain standards. It often involves the use of pressure or incentives and may result in some form of negotiation or bargaining.
