#19 When mental illness becomes physical: A 10‑Year battle with eating disorders (with James Roffey)

“When mental illness becomes physical, that’s when you realise it’s not just in your head.”

James Roffey had a privileged start, with private schooling and dreams of football glory. But at 17, he lost his pathway: a football academy release shattered his identity. Grief, rejection and expectations spiraled into a decade-long struggle with anorexia and bulimia. He became trapped in a physical expression of mental illness, distancing himself from loved ones and nearly losing everything.

Against the odds, James chose recovery. Through therapy, unwavering discipline and rebuilding healthy routines, he reclaimed his body and mind. Today, he is a certified personal trainer turned high-performance coach, using his story to guide men toward resilience, self-awareness and honest communication.

This episode lays bare his journey from collapse to clarity and offers a powerful blueprint for anyone facing their own cracks.
