10. Optimizing Customer Experience across Pharmacy, Photography and Investing

In this episode, I talk to Ryan Glaze, who was my manager when I was an intern at a local community pharmacy. Students loved him for his humor and strong relational skills which resulted in excellent customer service. Ryan is not just a pharmacist. Throughout the journey of his life, he has combined his analytical and creative skills while working as a pharmacist, photographer and an investment advisor.

We talk about how Ryan uses analytical and creative skills to build businesses that serve people. Tune in to listen to the discussion on how he takes action on learning new things and building them into thriving businesses.

In this episode:

[02:55] Ryan’s career path

[07:43] Is emotional intelligence natural or learned?

[09:41] Learning from people around you

[13:25] Navigating and learning photography

[19:44] Why Ryan started his photography business

[26:10] Bringing creative energy

[27:40] Ryan as an investment advisor

[35:35] emotional intelligence conversation

[39:56] Key takeaways

Notable Quotes

  • When he (manager) knows he’s outclassed, he just lets the outclass person do their thing. That’s the mark of a good manager.
  • Photography in one sense isn’t related to pharmacy. But delivering a great customer experience is common to both sides.
  • You have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. I know that phrase is out there. But for a kid, they need to hear that. They need to step out. They need to know that there are safe spaces so you can mess up.
  • The vast majority of anything that anyone does purposely relates and ultimately has to do with another human being.
  • I think at the end of someone’s time here on earth, if they look at where they started and where they ended up, it’s never a straight line.
  • We got to the point where we were pretty close to a 100% success rate on getting a kid to smile and to get them to look at the camera at the same time. It sometimes would take ten minutes.
  • Some people need to be told certain things. They need to be pushed out of the nest.

Key takeaways

  • Ryan reminds us that we all have individual and collective purposes. If you look into that it often involves connecting to those around us.
  • Ryan oftentimes started new endeavors by following his curiosity to new opportunities and then using his emotional intelligence to develop a relationship with customers.
  • Ryan leads with serving others and looks for areas of need.
