Create Your Own Work with Avital Asuleen + Jeff Raab
Rebel-Actor, if you have a lot of different passions and wear many creative hats - actor, dancer, director musician, choreographer, writer, etc… - and you have SO many ideas for making art but don’t know how or where to start, then this episode is for YOU.
Today’s marvelous guests are Avital Asuleen and Jeff Raab! Avital Asuleen is a Brooklyn-based director, choreographer, performer, and educator (I have taken her incredible tap classes at Mark Morris Dance Center, check it out!). Jeff Raab is a NYC-based theatre artist, musician, an educational theatre teaching artist, and a professional origami artist/teacher. Avi and Jeff co-created the cabaret-style show Tonight for the Tapir together during 2020.
Today, we dig into the magic of creative collaboration in a global pandemic. Just because the world is upside down, doesn’t mean your creativity has to slow down.
If you want to learn:
How the seed of an idea comes to life
Why it’s so freeing to work in collaboration
What to do if you don’t like writing on your own
How Tonight for the Tapir evolved into a radio play
What it’s like to create from a space of play
How to create a priming process to introduce an audience to a space
Why limitation is creation
Actionable tips to set-up your own structure to create based on your strengths and weaknesses
Why Jeff doesn’t call “acting” acting anymore
Why Avi believes it's important to meet the collaborators who show up on your path
And SO much more! Avi, Jeff and I are super excited to hear what resonates with you, and how you are planning your own projects! Be sure to take a screenshot and tag @avitalasuleen, @jeffraaborigami and @serabanda in your IG stories to share your thoughts and takeaways, especially as you dig into the cabaret-style magic of Tonight for the Tapir!
