Season 2 Ep 2: the Promise of Migration (w/ Amelie Coppens and Pete Fung)

029 sits down with Amelie Coppens and Pete Fung to talk about migration, moving countries, its promises, expectations vs reality, taking space and claiming space as an Asian minority in the Netherlands, and last but not least, calling out the matcha mania.

Pete Fung

In 029 fashion, Pete Fung is a +852 born, +1-604 educated designer and researcher now living in +31. Often working with publics or specific communities, his practice explores how design can be used to critical engage with the complexities of our social contexts and interdependence. Next to his independent studio work, he is a design tutor in MA Social Design and the extracurricular coordinator at Design Academy Eindhoven.

Amelie Coppens

Raised between China and Belgium, Amelie spent the first decade of her life in Shanghai before returning to her hometown Ghent. Growing up between cultures sparked her lifelong curiosity about people; about how we live, connect and make sense of the world around us. This led her to study cultural anthropology in Utrecht. Her master’s thesis explored Chinese queer migrants living in the Netherlands, and how they navigate identities and belonging across borders. Having recently completed her studies, Amelie is now looking ahead to her next steps, eager to see where her passion for understanding the stories and practices that shape human lives will take her.
