
Have some fun learning Jamaican Patois with our young people. Showing patois some love and respect. For most of us, Patois is the first language we hear and thus it becomes our first language. Its descriptive nature influences our imaginations and makes us colourful, vibrant people.
Patois Definition: the dialect of a particular region, especially one with low status in relation to the standard language of the country.
Creole Definition: a creole language, or simply a creole, is a type or classification of language; in particular, a creole is a stable, natural language that has developed from a pidgin (i.e. a simplified language or simplified mixture of languages used by non-native speakers) that over time has become nativized by children as their first language, with the accompanying effect of a fully developed vocabulary and system of grammar.
Jamaican Patois: known locally as Patois (Patwa or Patwah) and called Jamaican Creole by linguists, is an English-based creole language with West African influences (a majority of loan words of Akan origin) spoken primarily in Jamaica and the Jamaican diaspora.
