Welcome to Aimpoint’s Taking Aim Podcast. Today, we sat down with Sergeant Tyler Vargas-Andrews. He delivers a haunting and powerful account of the August 26, 2021 suicide‑bomb attack at Abbey Gate of Kabul Airport—describing how he and fellow Marines spotted a suspected bomber, urgently requested engagement authority, were denied, then experienced “a flash and a massive wave of pressure” as the blast knocked him down and left his body torn and filled with hundreds of ball bearings. Despite losing his right arm above the elbow, his left leg, a kidney, and undergoing dozens of surgeries, he channeled his trauma into extraordinary resilience—adopting a mindset of “Never a victim,” embracing rigorous training, marathons, etc. Throughout his recovery, Tyler credits his family—especially his single mother, who balanced raising three kids and attending law school—for instilling perseverance and strength. His story is a testament not only to survival, but to turning unimaginable adversity into purpose.
