46. The PGA & Kevin Cook

Andy and Beemer break down the year’s second MAJOR of the season, The PGA, coming up this weekend at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Rain and length of the course will provide a brutal test for the world’s top players.

For the second half of the show, author Kevin Cook drops by and chats about his 2011 book about “Titanic” Thompson - one of the most influential characters of his era. Damon Runyon is said to have based Sky Masterson (Guys & Dolls) on Thompson in his short story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown.” Killed 5 Men, married 5 women, and sunk many opposing gambler’s bankrolls giving him the shared notoriety with the infamous Titanic. Cook’s career has spanned the spectrum as editor-in-chief of Golf Magazine to senior editor at Sports Illustrated to writing over 10 books on a myriad of topics.

We are in the heart of the golf season and the Street has made its way to North Carolina this week.

In this episode:

  • Admiration for the Tillinghast-designed Cricket Club

  • How the weather could heavily impact play at Quail Hollow

  • Andy and Beemer’s picks for the PGA Championship

  • Kevin Cook on what drew him to the story of Titanic Thompson

  • The time Titanic Thompson challenged Al Capone - and won

  • Who was Titanic? A gambler, hustler, and athlete all in one

  • The simplest (and smartest) bet Titanic ever made

  • How today’s sports betting, including the Super Bowl, compares
