This company is on a mission to reduce waste, and reliance on fossil fuels in the wool market!

Series 3, episode 7 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast!

Introducing Claire McGovern, Founder of Rhyme studio, a company that specialises in advisory, interior design and design manufacturing of high quality, customisable, responsible, and healthy sustainable furnishings that includes; carpets, tapestry & textile collections.

In many of our recent podcast episodes, we have discussed the textiles industry widely and the issues textile materials have on the environment. So we are always delighted to learn about new champions who are working in this space to reduce waste, introduce a circular approach in production and reuse as much as possible.

And that is exactly what Claire and her team are doing at Rhyme Studio.

After the collapse of the Irish wool market in 2020, Rhyme Studio became the sole entity both inside and outside Ireland promoting the use of native Irish wool for carpet & textiles. An environmental tragedy persists today as many sheep farmers the world over dump or burn freshly shorn wool deemed unacceptable by a fashion industry that will only trade in merino or fossil fuel based synthetic fibres.

With a shift towards mass production of petrochemical based synthetics and resource draining cotton, this approach has transformed the global fibre market, largely driven by the whims of the fashion industry. Within the EU alone, there is considerable wool waste and a failure to recognise the multi-faceted renewable and biodegradable qualities of this earliest known natural textile.

At Rhyme Studio it is their desire for the design world to put nothing out that does not give back in equal measure. Calling attention to the unnecessary waste, the decline of the global market for wool and the environmental crisis facing the industry. Carbon sinking, renewable & biodegradable wool fibre, not synthetic and fossil fuel dependent fibre is Nature’s way and has a multitude of uses not limited to their customizable surfacing and textiles.

Rhyme Studio’s ultimate goal is a circular production model for a genuinely responsible design collection.

This week’s podcast guest features Claire McGovern from Rhyme Studio.
