🍄Today we're going to be chatting about the Foxfire book of Appalachian Women. So let's give a little bit of background info about what Foxfire even is, especially for any listeners outside of the Southern Appalachians.
🍄“In 1966, a struggling English teacher at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Northeast Georgia asked his students what would make school more interesting. They decided to create a magazine, featuring stories gathered from their families and neighbors about the pioneer era of southern Appalachia as well as traditions still thriving in the region.
🍄The students called it ✨ “Foxfire” after the glow-in-the-dark fungus✨ found in the local hills. This spark of an idea turned into a phenomenon of education and living history, exploring how our past contributes to who we are and what we can become – how the past illuminates our present and inspires imagination.”

Today we are going to be speaking with a local legend. Is he a local legend? He might think my choice of words there doesn't fit. But I say it all the same because this man wears and has worn so many hats in his life that it's hard to keep track. Formally, on the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service website, you will find Craig Mauney listed as the Area Specialized Agent for Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Production. But that title hardly sums up his life experiences and interests professionally as well as personally. It's probably safe to say that if it has anything at all to do with plants and cultivating them, here in western North Carolina, Craig has knowledge of, if not some direct involvement in it.

Today we are continuing a chat review of “Confessions of a Recovering Environmentalist: And Other Essays” by Paul Kingsnorth. This book has a lot of discussion worthy subject matter, so we will be covering it over the course of a couple episodes. Today is part THREE. If you have not listened to part one OR part two please do so before listening to this episode.
Link to part one: https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/PYd3NXHATwb
Link to part two:
https://open.spotify.com/episode/5UKV3RWX29virhw5jIbyPW?si=3a5a8f9d81ac4e90
Brief summary of what the book is about this book:
Paul Kingsnorth was once an activist―an ardent environmentalist. He fought against rampant development and the depredations of a corporate world that seemed hell-bent on ignoring a looming climate crisis in its relentless pursuit of profit. But as the environmental movement began to focus on “sustainability” rather than the defense of wild places for their own sake, and as global conditions worsened, he grew disenchanted with the movement that he once embraced. He gave up what he saw as the false hope that residents of the First World would ever make the kind of sacrifices that might avert the severe consequences of climate change.
This iconoclastic, fearless, and ultimately hopeful book, which includes the much-discussed “Uncivilization” manifesto, asks hard questions about how we’ve lived and how we should live.

🌼Why Stories From the Earth? Humankind’s relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth. 🍄Follow us on Instagram
