The Stoa (translated to ‘porch’) was an environment in Ancient Greece for Philosophers to come together and discuss meaningful ideas. These ideas were considered dangerous at the time as their discussions would frequently challenge the monarchy, aristocracy and even God himself. However, while often risking death, these philosophers agreed that the highest virtue is the pursuit of truth and wisdom through rigorous debate. With no unassailable truths, they sat together on the floor as equals in the pursuit of this endeavor. Our organization is committed to reintroducing this environment to public discourse through the concept of the ‘Steel Man’. The ‘Steel Man’ is the opposite of ‘Straw Man’ while the latter is focused on belittling an argument, the former is an attempt to represent the position in its strongest form. Our purpose, simply, is to provide a space for people to think out loud.

Colloquia at Columbia University
Welcome to the first episode of the Stoa Podcast! This episode is a brief (and potentially chaotic) introduction to our inception at Columbia University as well as an opportunity to hear a bit about the founders: Perry Sidhu, Jonathan Karten, and Prakhar Gupta.
