Still Slaying: a Buffy-verse podcast

Penny and Kara take you on a journey of appreciation, nostalgia and deep analysis of all things Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Currently in BTVS Season 3 and we plan to rewatch the whole series (& Angel) in chronological order. New Episodes are published on Tuesdays. Why revisit the Buffy-verse? We think the show Still Slays. Buffy is both iconoclast and icon. 25 years ago she broke new ground for women characters as superheroes and women as people by subverting tropes, using kindness as strength and love as power. The cheeky vibe of the show provides a campy canvas for exploring some deep themes about trauma, societal ills and human nature all while delivering its signature witty dialogue. BTVS remains relevant and held in high critical regard 25 years later. For first time watchers of the series we try to avoid too many spoilers until the end of the podcast so it’s easy to skip. You can be a part of the discussion: Send us a text or voice message at stillslayingfeedback@gmail.com or comment at facebook.com/groups/podcastica and we'll respond on the air. 43: “In the Dark” and “I Fall to Pieces” (Angel S1E3 and E4)
Content Warning: Discussion of torture and violence against women in many forms, including sexual violence, stalking, dometic and intimate partner violence and rape culture. “I don't know about you, but I had a nice day. You know, except for the bulk of it where I was nearly tortured to death.” Slay Squad is doubling down on the quest for redemption this week and covering two episodes at once. Penny and Sam dig into these dark stories of violence with as much good cheer as possible, enjoying the chemistry between Spike and Angel. Cordy and Doyle and a guest star visit from Oz. The conversation meanders through queer coding, torture tropes and depictions of torture in popular media, Jack Bauer and 24, Criminal Minds, The Walking Dead, the allure of power, ring sizes, vigilante names, Team Cap, the bear vs man debate, Gisele Pelicot, Daniel Sloss, Unbelievable on Netflix (go watch it and show it to the men in your life), and how Doyle needs Queer Eye.  The Slay Squad shares some personal thoughts on current events in the US.  Next time, we’ll be covering BTVS, Season 4, Episode 4, “Fear Itself.” Keep Slaying!
