Pressure Mounts on Israel to Let Aid Into Gaza

Aid is trickling into Gaza, where more than 150 people have died of hunger and international pressure is growing to allow further aid to enter the strip. Ukraine passed a national law that restores power to anti-corruption bodies after mass protests. And Donald Trump just can’t seem to shake the story about the Epstein files - mostly because his efforts to not talk about them only seem to make everyone want to talk about them even more.

Texas Recovers From Extreme Flash Floods

More than 120 people have died after flash floods in Texas wiped out entire rural towns. The EU reached an agreement with Israel to get aid into Gaza, but the political rhetoric surrounding long term solutions has been troubling. And Trump is starting the tariff machine back up after countries refused to come to the table for new trade deals.

Will the Israel-Iran Ceasefire Hold?

The war between Israel and Iran seems to be halted after the U.S. dropped bombs on Iranian nuclear sites, with the effectiveness of those attacks unclear. A series of protests broke out in Kenya over a rising cost of living, but also to combat government censorship. And Trump’s big bill passed through congress, enacting medicare cuts for millions.

Americans Protest Trump's Deportation Scheme

Trump deployed the military to Los Angeles to quell largely nonviolent protests over the deportation of dozens of residents by ICE, sparking bigger protests in California and nationwide. The aid boat known as the Freedom Flotilla was seized in Gaza, with activists onboard (including Greta Thunberg) being deported as dozens were killed in the Gaza strip trying to get food aid. And a 21 year old shooter in Austria killed ten people in a shooting at his former high school, sparking a conversation about boys and men.

Ukraine's Genius Drone Strike

Ukraine launched a massive secret drone strike on Russia and shocked the world with its technical ability. The Trump White House put 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum coming from anywhere outside the U.S. And South Korea elected the Liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung as the country’s next president after ousting Yoon Suk-yeol a little while back.

Gazans Starve as Israel Continues the War

Palestinians in Gaza are beginning to starve as Israel continues to block humanitarian aid from coming in, with Israeli-U.S. aid efforts being overrun on the ground. Russia is preparing for a summer offensive in Ukraine while Zelensky shores up support from allies around the world and Trump even starts to get irritated with Putin. And the U.S. economy is taking one on the chin, with more tariff stuff from the White House and the “Big Beautiful Bill” passing in the House, despite business leaders and, well, everyone having something to dislike about it.

Friedrich Merz's Rough First Day as Chancellor

Friedrich Merz had a rough day after losing the first round of what is usually a ceremonial vote to pick a new chancellor before clenching the vote in the second round. Israel is choosing to block aid from getting into Gaza and upend humanitarian organizations in the process. And the Romanian elections, which are happening for a second time after the first ones were cancelled, saw the leader of the far right take the biggest slice, but a second round is on its way.

Spring Break Message

In recent weeks, several men have been sent from the U.S. to El Salvador’s CECOT prison without due process. The prison functions more as a torture facility, with prisoners kept malnourished, isolated, and as far as we can tell, no one has ever come out alive. Among them is Andrys, a gay makeup artist deported after seeking asylum in the U.S. due to tattoos that read “Mom” and “Dad.” The case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia stands out: he fled gang violence, lived legally in Maryland with his American wife and child, and was deported even after a judge acknowledged the danger he faced and ordered him to be protected in the U.S. Though the conservative Supreme Court unanimously ruled he must be returned, the White House has said it cannot act for the El Salvador government, despite the fact that Trump met with El Salvador’s president just yesterday. Lawyers continue to fight, but experts say legal options are nearly gone, so political pressure is what's left.

You can go to congress.gov/contact-us to find out how to get in touch with your members of congress, and let them know that what’s going on in El Salvador is simply unacceptable.

Trump gave his 2025 State of the Union address to Congress, and it was not all that different from just another campaign speech. The U.S.-Ukraine relationship is on the rocks after a tumultuous week, but it’s on the mend (slowly). And Arab leaders proposed an alternate plan for reconstructing Gaza to Trump’s “Riviera of the Middle East” idea.

Meet Germany's New Chancellor, Friedrich Merz (and more)

Germany just got a new chancellor after Sunday’s elections, with the center-right making gains and the far-right doing a little too well. Emmanuel Macron went to Washington to meet with Trump and discuss the situation in Ukraine, and while they had some differences, they seemed like old pals and both were optimistic about peace in Ukraine. And speaking of Washington, Trump fired some top military brass as well as Army lawyers, for no great reason that we can find (though we have some theories).

Conflict in the DRC (and more)
This week, Erin and Jake talked about the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has escalated with the rebel group M23 capturing the city of Goma. The roots of the conflict are complex, stemming from arbitrarily drawn African national borders by European colonizers. This has led to disputes between tribal and religious groups within the same country and is also a factor in the Rwandan genocide. The M23 group, formed to protect Tutsi people, has reignited violence in the resource-rich eastern DRC, leading to mass casualties and a humanitarian crisis, and prompting international calls for action. There are also reports that the fighting has caused water and electricity supplies to the city to be cut off.

Then they moved to the US, where newly inaugurated President Trump signed a series of executive orders on immigration, including one that seeks to revoke birthright citizenship for children of undocumented parents and halting all refugee admissions. Trump has framed immigration as a national security issue, granting the president more unilateral power. The immigration policies led to a recent diplomatic breakdown between the US and Colombia over deported Colombians sent on military planes. The issue was resolved through diplomatic channels.

Then, some financial news. A Chinese startup, DeepSeek, launched an AI chatbot at a fraction of the cost of its US competitors, sparking concern in the US tech and stock markets. DeepSeek says that it only needed $6 million to train their chatbot, compared to the $100 million needed to train ChatGPT. The AI model is comparable to the industry leaders in the US, on par with Google and OpenAI, and it has raised questions about the US's ability to keep up in this market, with Nvidia, a major processor manufacturer, seeing the largest single-day drop in market history. But while China has global ambitions for AI, their censorship standards may end up being the challenge that slows them down.

Other global headlines from the week include Denmark bumping up military spending for the defense of Greenland after Trump's comments about taking it by force, the Serbian PM resigning after months of protests, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko claiming victory in an election which was called a sham by Western governments. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he will cover the US contribution to the UN's climate body after Trump withdrew the US from the Paris agreement in his first day in office. Displaced Palestinians have begun returning to Northern Gaza, many of them to destroyed homes, and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz was marked on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Finally, Thailand has become the first country in SE Asia to recognize marriage equality for same-sex couples, with hundreds of couples getting married to celebrate.

Then, in Have You Heard? they talk through the rest of the headlines and give you just what you need to know to fit in at the watercooler, and they'll even throw in some animal news just for fun.

This podcast turns into an article summary at each week's episode over on Substack. We'd love for you to subscribe!
