8. The paradox of perfectionism with Cat Burnett

In today’s episode I am joined by Cat Burnett who is a certified and ICF accredited coach and coach supervisor who believes in evidence-based methods, exceptional training and development, and humanity’s ability to persevere and improve.

Cat became a coach in 2018, when coaching karate at an international level and recovering from depression collided. As she learned how to untangle her thoughts and rebuild her mindset, she realised she could facilitate the same change in others and became devoted to learning how.

When Cat isn’t coaching, you’ll likely find her curled up on the sofa with her own cat Thor (named after the lightning god, not the Marvel character), an engaging book, and a giant cup of tea!

Today we spoke about perfectionism and how having high standards can contribute to depression and feeling disconnected from our lives. We also drew comparisons between perfectionism and people pleasing and how our mindset affects everything.

We discussed:

  • How the way you think about something influences the results
  • Why visualisation can help get you to your desired outcomes
  • Cat’s experience of perfectionism and having a fixed mindset
  • How different choices can impact our lives and why Cat doesn’t regret dropping out of her Master’s degree
  • Ways to overcome perfectionism and let go of striving for unattainable standards
  • How your perfectionistic attitude can actually trip you up when trying to overcome perfectionism – and what to do about it!
  • Why people pleasers and perfectionists can struggle with coaching and identifying their own needs – but why that’s not a problem.
  • How following your desires can benefit everyone around you
  • The dilemma of Instagram self help and positivity that ignores nuance, context and privilege vs. using the core message of self help to improve your life
  • Difficulties we have as “content creators” sharing our story and content on mental health

We discussed fixed v. growth mindset – this is a concept formulated by Carol Dweck which you can find out more about here.

As I mentioned at the end of the episode, I would love for a wide range of lived experiences to be heard on this podcast.
