In 1925, a fire in St. John, Washington, destroyed the business district, including the movie theater, after an explosion in a barber shop. Volunteer firefighters battled the blaze, but lack of electricity hindered their efforts. Meanwhile, in Spokane, the Home Telephone and Telegraph Company announced plans to replace manual telephones with automatic ones. Fast forward to 1975, the Davenport Hotel in Spokane was remodeled and promoted as the newest place, despite being built in 1914. The hotel closed in 1985, but was fully restored in 2002, becoming a landmark again.
