I’ve always been fascinated by Limpets! They're the conical creatures that attach themselves to rocks around the coastline! Following a feeding jaunt underwater at high tide, each limpet will cleverly return to the very same home position on the rock before it's marooned at low tide. It uses some kind of incredible navigation system that has baffled limpet biologists despite decades of study. No GPS, maps, clocks or tide charts! They don't even have eyes!
I was really excited to find a beach in Donegal that was literally covered in their empty shells. I filled a basin with them and have brought them on a journey around Ireland in the van with me!
I was mesmerised by the clinking sound they make as they’re being rustled around in the basin and against the rocks. I made a temporary installation with them on a limestone rock on their home beach in Bundoran, Donegal.
