In our last Dear African church discussion, we asked a necessary question:
Moralism & Hyper-Grace — What Is the True Gospel?
We unpacked these terms, exposed how they show up in today’s church, and traced how both extremes have shaped the African Christian experience.
We talked about:
• Legalism disguised as holiness
• Hyper-grace disguised as freedom
• Tithing and transactional faith
• Prophets and the temptation of spiritual authority
• Our relationship with sin
• And ultimately how the true gospel rescues us from both extremes
The gospel is Christ crucified, risen, saving, sanctifying.
Let’s keep returning to Christ alone, because only Christ defines the gospel!
In this sermon, In this sermon, Pastor Osinachi Nwoko draws from Paul’s letter to Philemon to show us that reconciliation is not optional for the Christian; it’s a reflection of the gospel we profess. Just as Christ reconciled us to God, we are called to pursue peace with one another in humility, truth, and love. If you enjoyed this, do follow and share for more biblical sermons.

In this first episode of our Dear African Church series, we sat down with Pastor Murungi Igweta and Olamide Falase to wrestle with a vital question: Is the African church Christ-centered?
We discussed the troubling rise of the prosperity gospel and why it is so attractive in our context; because sinful hearts often expect what God has not promised. Yet we also saw why this message is so dangerous: it distorts the cross, cheapens suffering, and shifts the church’s focus from Christ to earthly gain.
Together, we reflected on:
- Why Christ alone is the true Head of the church, not any pastor or “man of God”
- The danger of man-centered worship and music that distracts from the gospel
- The urgent need for biblical literacy in our churches
- The true gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
- How believers can reject falsehood and replace it with sound doctrine
We invite you to listen, reflect, and pray with us for a Christ-centered church. For further study, read the Africa Statement on the Prosperity Gospel and Word of Faith Theology at ASPG – Africa Statement on the Prosperity Gospel and Word of Faith TheologyGrace to you!
