Just to the south-east of Berlin, at the end of S-Bahn line 3 is Erkner, a 12.000 soul town in the state of Brandenburg known for its industrial heritage, its beautiful lakes – and an internationally renowned social science research institution it houses: The Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS). Dr. Timmo Krüger forscht am IRS über den Kohleausstieg. Sie Forschung reiht sich ein in mehrere Projekte zur Klimapolitik, zur Energiewende und zu gesellschaftlicher Transformation, die am IRS verfolgt werden. Doch Krüger hat eine spezielle Perspektive: Er verfolgt den Gedanken, dass nur ein Wandel hin zu einer Postwachstumsgesellschaft – also einer Gesellschaft, die nicht mehr nach kontinuierlichem Wirtschaftswachstum strebt – die Antwort auf die sozialen und ökologischen Krisen unserer Zeit, allen voran die Klimakrise, sein kann. Er will herausfinden, wie die Menschen in drei deutschen Braunkohleregionen sich ihre Zukunft vorstellen, und ob ein radikaler Umbau der Wirtschaft für sie eine Option ist. Neben seiner Forschung spricht er in Episode 2 des Podcasts Society@Space darüber, was ihn motiviert, und wie Postwachstum auch im wissenschaftlichen Alltag gelebt werden kann, etwa durch den Verzicht auf Flugreisen.
