Breaking Down Barriers: Approaches for Discussing Intimacy with Adolescent & Young Adult Patients
Clinicians play a vital role in the sexual and reproductive health of adolescent and young adult patients. However, discussing intimacy-related issues with this age group can be particularly challenging due to the sensitive nature of the topic, as well as the discomfort that many patients may experience when discussing these topics with a healthcare provider.
Despite the difficulties, having open and honest conversations about intimacy is crucial for ensuring that patients have the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health. This is particularly important for young people who are just beginning to explore their sexuality and may not have a clear understanding of the risks and benefits of different sexual behaviors.
Overcoming the challenges associated with discussing intimacy with adolescent and young adult patients requires a combination of empathy, communication skills, and clinical knowledge. It also requires a willingness to address uncomfortable topics in a non-judgmental and supportive manner, while also providing accurate and evidence-based information that can help patients make informed decisions about their sexual health.
Our guests this week will share their experiences and insights on identifying the need to have these important discussions and how it evolved into a passion. They will also provide valuable advice and guidance on how to have these crucial dialogues with our patient population, including tips on building rapport, navigating difficult conversations, and addressing common concerns and misconceptions. By sharing their expertise and insights, our guests hope to empower clinicians to engage in these important conversations and provide the best possible care for their adolescent and young adult patients.
