This is a podcast for those who want to learn Spanish Language in a very unusual way but very effective. I will be reading different texts very slowly, so you don’t have any problems to understand. You will learn new vocabulary and grammar but also interesting things about idioms, culture, traditions, history and superstitions of different countries but specially from Latin America.

In the Slow Spanish Podcast you can listen to me reading texts, songs, poems and many other things in slow Spanish with translation and also explaining the new words.

Costa Rica es uno de los pocos países en todo el mundo que no tiene ejército, junto con Andorra, Islandia, Mauricio o Mónaco, por ejemplo. El ejército se abolió el 1 de diciembre de 1948 después de una Guerra Civil. El entonces presidente dijo: “No quiero un ejército de soldados, sino de educadores”. Desde entonces, no hay una organización armada permanente pero se permite formar fuerzas militares para mantener el orden o por convenio internacional. ¿Por qué sus habitantes se llaman ticos? En 1856 y 1857 Costa Rica se vio acechada por el ejército de piratas filibusteros que querían asaltar la costa. Costa Rica tuvo ayuda de soldados de otros países vecinos, quienes se dieron cuenta que los combatientes costarricenses usaban muchísimo el diminutivo -ico, -ica (chiquitico, por ejemplo). Además, se dirigían cariñosamente a sus compatriotas llamándoles hermaniticos. Con el tiempo y el uso continuado, los habitantes del país pasaron a ser ticos y ticas.La penicilina es tica, una de las curiosidades de Costa Rica más esconocidas.Seguramente siempre has oído que Alexander Fleming fue quien descubrió las propiedades de la penicilina. Pero en Costa Rica discrepan. El doctor costarricence Clodomiro Picado (apodado “Clorito”) fue su predecesor publicando un informe sobre los efectos de la penicilina en sus pacientes en 1927, un año antes que Fleming patentara el descubrimiento. Clorito avisó a la Academia de Ciencias de París de su hallazgo antes que Fleming, pero no le fue reconocido. Una de las curiosidades de Costa Rica más famosas es el uso de la expresión “Pura vida”. Antes de visitar el país es probable que te suene como un tópico. Pero una vez allí, es cierto que se oye “pura vida” a todas horas: como saludo, despedida, a modo de “¿cómo estás?”, como frase de ánimo, para celebrar una victoria… ¡Todo vale para exclamar pura vida! En Costa Rica hay alrededor de 200 formaciones volcánicas en el país, la mitad activas. El volcán más famoso es el Arenal, además es uno de los más activos del mundo. Por suerte, desde 1968 no hay ninguna erupción peligrosa. El lago más grande del país es artificial. Una de las curiosidades de Costa Rica más inusuales: el lago Arenal es el más grande del país ¡y es artificial! Está a los pies del volcán Arenal y es un gran centro de deportes acuáticos recreativos.La pipa fría es el remedio para todos los males.
