Brigadeiro, o doce nacional!

Brigadeiro, the national sweet!

The brigadeiro is a typical sweet of Brazilian cuisine, of Carioca origin, which quickly spread to the rest of the country, making its presence at birthday parties common, along with sweets such as cajuzinho and beijinho. It is also known in Rio Grande do Sul by the name of negrinho.

The origin of the name "brigadeiro" is linked to the presidential campaign of Brigadier Eduardo Gomes, candidate of the UDN to the Presidency of the Republic in 1946.

Heloísa Nabuco de Oliveira, member of a traditional carioca family that supported the brigadier's candidacy, created a type of candy, slightly different from the current version being made with milk, eggs, butter, sugar and chocolate, and named it with the patent of the preferred candidate .

The candy, made from condensed milk, butter, sugar and powdered chocolate, initially made as a way of raising funds for the campaign, quickly gained popularity and spread to the rest of the country with the Brigadeiro campaign.

As the electoral party parties were very disputed by the population, they soon started calling friends to go and eat the "brigadeiro sweetie".

Over time, the name "brigadeiro" became so associated with the sweet that it came to be known only as "brigadeiro". Despite the support received, Eduardo Gomes was defeated in the elections, and the election was won by then general Eurico Gaspar Dutra.

The brigadeiro ingredients are condensed milk, powdered chocolate, butter and granulated chocolate for topping. It can be done either on the stove or in the microwave oven.

My favorite brigadeiro is made with condensed milk, bitter cocoa powder and butter, for a more balanced flavor.

Have you tried brigadeiro?
