A Voice For Kaurs, Kes and Bullying | @thatxkaur

Today I was joined by @thatxkaur to discuss her Sikhi journey, including how Kaurs can start to keep their kes (uncut hair). We also discussed Bhenji's experience with bullying because of her kes, and how important it is to talk about this issue.  This podcast was recorded prior to the incident that occurred in Telford. Many Sikhs have addressed this issue, so I think it’s my turn to do the same.

To the young singh that was treated so poor. I hope you know that your kes is beautiful and there were many before you who fought for our identity. I’m sorry that we still have to continue this fight but I hope and pray that tomorrow this battle is easier for you. I hope you went to school the next day with your head held high, and if you didn’t I want you to know that it’s okay. But what isn’t okay, is fear.

To our younger brother. You handled it so well. You tried to walk away, you didn’t back down. I ask you to continue getting back up because Guru Sahib blessed us with our kes saying that it’s our fortress, and a reminder that we’re forever under Guru Ji’s Charan. I want you to know that if you need anything, myself and many other Sikhs are standing with you. All you have to do is put out your hand and we will all hold it.

To our mothers and fathers, don’t be scared of allowing your child to carry their kes to school. Continue to teach them the importance of our kes and fill them with strength because this world is filled with hate and our hair is soaked in love.

As I speak, Instagram has hidden #Sikh once again, and Punjab’s farmers are getting beaten and bruised in India despite their unconditional seva. These attempts to silence us shouldn’t stop us. The response we showed to the video of our younger brother getting bullied is a clear example of how strong this panth can be.

Many more podcasts regarding these issues are to come, but until then,

Please forgive us if we said anything wrong. We are still young and learning.
