Ep. 61 :: How Story Is Salve For The Soul (with Dr. Anita Johnston)
Today, it is a great honor to host Dr. Anita Johnston on SATIATE.  Anita Johnston, Ph.D., CED-S, is a depth psychologist, storyteller, and author of Eating in the Light of the Moon: How Women Can Transform Their Relationships with Food Through Myth, Metaphor, and Storytelling, which has been published in seven languages. She has been working in the field of women’s issues, eating difficulties and body image distress for over 35 years and is currently the Founder and Executive Director of ‘Ai Pono* Hawaii, an eating disorders residential treatment program in Maui. She is the co-creator of the Light of the Moon Café, an online workbook and support circle for Eating in the Light of the Moon, providing self-study and interactive courses for women from around the world. Dr. Johnston provides virtual individual consultations and conducts workshops internationally. She is best known for integrating metaphor and storytelling into her training as a clinical psychologist to explain the complex issues that underlie struggles with eating, exercise, and body image. Not only is she an absolute treasure, doing incredible work in the world (you'll know what I mean when you hear her strong and wise voice), she also takes some time to share some of her favorite myths and stories with us, those she uses in her work helping women heal their relationship to food and body. LISTEN AND HEAR: ~ What it was like growing up in the matriarchal society of Guam for her entire childhood, and how matriarchal society deeply influenced her work. ~ The ways in which universal body image messaging in our culture has been delivered up in such a raw and vulnerable way, leaving so many women with struggle and strife. ~ How each of us uncovers what we can relate to within age old myth, folktale, and story, based on our own experiences, stories and struggles. ~ A real life story telling by Dr. Anita Johnston that you don't want to miss.  ~ How sharing our own stories (when we are ready) can be so healing and even become someone else’s survival guide. We could all use a little extra TLC these days. Get comfy, sit back and listen to these stories as food for your soul and your own path to wholeness. This is absolutely one of my favorite SATIATE episodes to date, and wow!  I cannot wait for you to listen.
