[Serpent Lungs] and Chas-T**ty Bras: The Boob Episode

When it comes to health topics, we’ve spent a fair amount of time talking about perimenopause and menopause, but we haven’t spent a lot of time talking specifically about breasts, even though they seem to be just as complicated and frustrating and confusing.   October was breast cancer awareness month and we’ve had two breast cancer survivors on our show, so we didn’t want to do another full episode on breast cancer specifically, but we did want to talk about breasts - how we feel about them, figuring out how to find a good bra, breast reductions, random boob pain, and so much more.

Every boob is different from every other boob, including the one right next to it.  The shape, the form, the density, the sizes, the colors, and how we feel about our breasts varies from person to person too.  They can be the source of pain, pleasure, shame, confidence, fear, courage, comfort, and failure.  Sometimes they make us mad and sometimes they make us laugh.

They are part of the female experience, and during this episode, we are going to talk about ours.  And we would love to hear yours!  What is your journey with your breasts that you have never shared?  You can share it with us!

Survival of the Siblings: Confessions About Birth Order

In this episode, we are talking about birth order.  Why?  Because Harper's older sister and Jen were talking a few weeks ago and suggested it.  Harper is a middle sister between two girls, and it’s a topic of conversation that tends to come up between them somewhat regularly.  According to her sister, that’s because Harper brings up how much she was ignored and forgotten as a child as often as possible.

It’s all in good fun, and we laugh about it a lot, but it’s actually a good topic, because birth order is one of those things that can add a lot of context to our life story, and help us understand ourselves and our partners and friends more fully.

Harper even has a bit of background related to this topic, which you will hear more about in the episode, but we would love to hear your real life stories as well!  Email us at salonconfessionpodcast@gmail.com, or find us on the socials and salon confessions podcast.

Sustainable Haircare and Pirate Audacity - Fun with Kate Assaraf

When passionate women with rich personal stories build businesses, they do so for much more than profit, and those are the people we love to talk to and share with you.

Kate Assaraf is one of those women.  Kate came from the beauty industry in product formulation and marketing, but started her career backstage, and she tells about just how fake the beauty industry can be.  She was so passionate about turning the beauty industry on its head that she built Dip with grit and determination and a lot of risk-taking.  She reminded us that women are SO capable, and we can do a lot more than we usually give ourselves credit for.  And I will celebrate that message any day.

She is funny, heartfelt, and we wanted to hang out and talk with her for a lot longer than we did.  Jen and I both have our dip shampoo bars on order, and we will let you know what we think later this season!

The LIVE Menopause Meltdown

For your listening pleasure today, we have captured a real-life hormonal meltdown of two perimenopausal women who are losing their ever-loving shit over…well…everything.

We didn’t plan for it.  We actually had an entirely different topic planned for this episode.  But as soon as we started exchanging a few salty comments about where our moods were at and we realized we needed to let it all out and figured it would be interesting to capture it all and see what happened.

As it turns out, it’s hilarious, chaotic, sweaty, contains a higher than usual frequency of curse words, some excellent stories of menopause meltdowns…emphasis on the melting… and plenty of tears - both the laughing and the crying kind.

There is nothing more honest than two women in the midst of hormonal chaos letting out all the rage, frustration, ridiculousness and our various attempts to find any kind of balance and calm in the midst of the volcanic hormonal madness going on in our bodies.

So, be warned - this is laugh out loud, accidentally pee a little, get sweaty laughing and can’t see because you are crying content.  If you are driving, you may need to pull over occasionally for your safety!

[ig-NITE-ed] Value: Knowing Your Worth

Today’s topic is about Knowing your Worth, and in many ways, starting a podcast is a test of knowing and understanding your worth.  We used to have the best conversations and when Jen suggested we start a podcast Harper didn’t know if anyone would care or want to listen.  But as we’ve done this show for the past few years, it’s become clear that what we bring to the podcast environment does have value and we do have worth in this space.  We may be a smaller show, but we continue to grow thanks to you Confessionistas!

As we talk today about knowing our worth, we examine all the ways we have grown into understanding our value - from how we selected our second husbands to how we take care of ourselves, how many things we have let GO of caring about, understanding our financial value in the workplace, defending women’s right to choose what they wear and how they present themselves to the world, and even knowing your worth so well that you can admit when you are wrong and own your mistakes.

We cover everything we could think of in one manicure session, but there’s so much more!  What did we miss about how you have grown to understand your value in the world, and how you carry yourself today differently than you did when you were younger?

We would love to hear your stories of growth and a-ha moments that brought you into the more confident woman you are today, and how that impacts the friends you choose and keep, the way you speak about yourself, and the way you operate in the world.

The Energy of GIfts: [Dark Diamonds] and Precious Knicknacks

For this episode, we talk about the energy of gifts, which we thought was a great topic for the confessional, because it’s something that can sometimes feel like a secret, even if it’s a happy, special secret.

So we dove into things like gifts from our dads and how rare that was, special gifts from and for our kids, and the feeling of purging gifts that had energy associated with them.  Gifts that came from loving people but no longer serve us, and the grief of letting them go; gifts that hold the energy of an old romance; and gifts from people we really don’t like and so we get rid of the thing to purge the energy of the person, even if we like the thing.

Such is the energy that people imbue into the things they give.  We treasure ancient, unusable, or trashy items from people we love and cherish, and we get rid of nice, practical, or valuable things from people we don’t want to think about anymore.

What have you held onto because of the energy associated with it?

We would love to hear your stories!  How have you dealt with the item as a result?  Email us at SalonConfessionsPodcast@gmail.com , or find us on the socials at Salon Confessions Podcast.

Love, Truth, Leaky Bladders and Saggy Boobs: Real Talk with Jen & Harper

Here we are - kicking off SEASON 6 of our grand Salon Confessions adventure! Each episode, Harper heads into Jen’s private nail studio and we lock the door, pull the curtain, and confess to the altar of polish all of the things that women want to talk about but rarely do.

We talk about the foibles, fallacies, and frustrations of being women in perimenopause, and bring on guests to discuss things that go on behind the public curtains of our lives.

As we kick off this season, we wanted to do some catching up on what we’ve been up to during our summer break, and share stories of the silliness that is life in our 50s.  Bladder leakage, telling it like it is with no more people pleasing filter, sagging boobs and forgetting our words are just some of the topics we cover in this season premiere, and along the way we laugh - a lot!

We are so glad that you have joined us, whether you are new to Salon Confessions or a long-time subscriber.  We love confessing to you and opening up all the conversations that we secretly want to be having but almost never do.  When women come together and talk about the real stuff, we learn, we grow, and we release the shame that piles up on us when we imagine no one else is experiencing anything similar.

And we love to hear from you!  Tell us your stories and confessions of real life.  email us at SalonConfessionsPodcast@gmail.com, or find us on the socials at Salon Confessions Podcast.  Come join us in the confessional and release your fears and foibles to the altar of polish right along with us.

We have a great season brewing for you and we need you every step of the way!  Please make sure to like, subscribe and rate our show so that we can reach more like-minded people.  Your engagement truly makes this podcast possible, and we couldn’t do it without you!

Rethinking Skincare (and Roses) with Dr. Ebru of Aveseena

In this episode, we welcome one final virtual guest into Jen’s nail studio with us - Dr. Ebru of Aveseena Skin Care.

Dr. Ebru is an internationally recognized immunologist with decades of research under her belt, and a personal passion for science, skin, and women's well-being. She has spent her career studying the intricate relationship between the immune system and the skin—especially how stress, aging, and environmental triggers affect women as we move through different life stages.

Her work is rooted not just in clinical knowledge, but in a deep care for women’s health—inside and out.  She is also a lot of fun, and we had a great time together!

She’s a brilliant scientist and skin expert, but never acted like she had all the answers. Her commitment to evidence and empathy came through in everything she shared—and that made us want to listen.

AND -we are delighted to offer our Confessionistas a Special offer from Aveseena - 20% off sitewide at www.aveseena.com with the code BeautyConfess, through February of 2026.

In the Confessional with a Menopausal Femme Fatale! Satori Shakoor

Our guest today has a litany of writing, performing, music, and acting credits to her name.  Satori Shakoor began her career with acclaim as a background singer and recording artist, touring with George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic as one of the iconic Brides of Funkenstein - later becoming an actor, comedienne, and television comedy writer.

in 2011 she joined one of my favorite storytelling organizations - The Moth - as a Mainstage storyteller and host, and continued her spotlight achievements as a 2017 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow, host for Detroit Performs live, and emcee for the 2024 Kresge Centennial Event where President Barack Obama gave the keynote address.

She is also the creator and Executive Producer of The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers which she founded in 2012, where she lives her purpose to connect humanity, heal and transform communities, and deliver uplifiting, thought-provoking, and soul-enriching entertainment through the art and craft of storytelling.

On this episode, she joined us virtually in the studio to talk about one of our hot topics - menopause! and her upcoming film release - Confessions of a Menopausal Femme Fatale - a storytelling solo stand-up concert film debuting on AppleTV+, Amazon Prime and Google Play on June 12.

In her film, Satori relives and explores her menopause journey with wit, song, tragedy, and healing.  She has become a living anthem for the importance of bursting through the taboo of keeping quiet about menopause, and we could not be more humbled and proud to have her join our show to share her message and promote her film.

We can’t wait for you to hear the rich, poetic way she speaks about her experience, and all women’s experience, as only an accomplished storyteller can.  This was a joyful, soul-filling hour for us, and we know it will be for you too.

A [Motley] Crew: Rue is live in the Confessional!

When we shifted from a sporadic side project to a consistent show, my first priority was learning how to edit. Because we record during live manicures, our setup is... challenging. Between “sound bleed” from sitting close together and the background noise—filing, beeping, clinking—we basically picked the worst environment for beginner podcasters.

During a mini-sabbatical from work, Harper was laser-focused on improving our audio. But none of the podcasting advice out there addressed our kind of sound setup or issues. Then she found Rue.

Harper upgraded our gear, learned Audacity, and got brave enough to add guests (and even more audio chaos). But none of it would’ve worked without Rue. When Harper returned to work, she realized she couldn’t keep up with editing, so she asked Rue to take over. Since Season 4, Rue’s been our primary editor. Harper still does final tweaks, but Rue’s the magician behind the mix.

In this episode, we’re bringing Rue into the studio—virtually—so you can meet the third member of our Salon Confessions team. She’s a joy, a pro, and an incredible woman. We are quite the Motley Confessional Crew—and now you’ll hear why.

Finding our Femininity - When do we feel it and Why?

What defines femininity, or masculinity, and how do you connect with those elements of yourself?  That’s the question we are pondering in today’s episode.

In our last episode, Jen and Harper went to a spa and did a Yoni steam, where we sat over pots of steaming herbs to help moisturize and revitalize our female parts.  As we talked about it afterward, Jen shared that it was a good way to connect with her Feminine side, and after that conversation, Harper could not get that comment out of her head.

For the next week, Harper kept wondering what she defined as connecting with her feminine side, and similarly, what it felt like to connect to her masculine energy, and thought about when she wanted or needed to connect more with one or the other.  The whole idea was so distracting and interesting that they decided to talk about it more in this episode.

Jen & Harper Try It Out: A Royal Yoni Steam Adventure

This season, we haven’t yet done a Try It Out episode, and we really thought long and hard about doing a sauna and open water cold plunge, since we live in a cold weather state and cold plunge is supposed to be the best new health trend.  But as this season crept on, we kept not scheduling that cold plunge, and finally realized we just really didn’t want to.  Thankfully, Jen did some more research and found out it’s not as good for menopausal women as it is for men and younger women, so that gave us an easy out!

Then Jen did some more hunting around for a unique experience we could try out for you all, and found the perfect thing for us to try - a Yoni steam.  This is an ancient practice that can be found across various cultures globally, from ancient Egypt to traditional Korean medicine and some African cultures as a part of a rite of passage for young women entering womanhood.  It has been used as a sacred practice for physical, spiritual and emotional cleansing and healing, and now is entering modern practices in spas and holistic health centers.

Jen found a local spa that offered Yoni steam, and was able to book a session for us to try it out in the same room - because, you know, friendship!  And the location was able to set up a space to accomodate our request, allowing us to talk about our experience in real time.

Now, as always, we are not health care providers and we are not going to offer any health care guidance or recommendations for you about your own health care in this episode.  You should always check with your health care providers if you have questions or concerns about your body before trying something like this out.

We had a great time with this experience, and it made us laugh and giggle and think and reflect, and overall we were very glad we did it!

I'm So Hot!! Why am I So Hot?!?!

As women in our 50s, we often turn to topics related to perimenopause and menopause, because frankly, there is no end to the things we can talk about in this area.

One of the things we’ve both noticed is that our internal core temperature has seemed to be higher these days, but neither of us felt like we were really having what seemed like “hot flashes.” At least not in the way we had seen and heard them described.  Gross night sweats, evening face flushing, or just generally feeling warmer all the time, sure, but not the dramatic hot flash we had heard about.

But recently, Harper had had her first real, honest to goodness hot flash, and finally understood why these are so bothersome!

As we talk, Jen realizes maybe she’s had some hot flashes too, and we also find that there is a hidden benefit for us with this hotter season of our lives!

Have you experienced hot flashes, or how has perimenopausal temperature regulation changed for you?  How much of a bother has it been in your life?  We want to hear your stories!  Email us at SalonConfessionsPodcast@Gmail.com , or find us on the socials at Salon Confessions Podcast.

And please share this episode with anyone in your life that might need to hear more about what this feels like!

Jen 'Recked' Her What? A Pelvic Floor Odyssey

The pelvic floor is the entire group of muscles, tendons, organs, and structures that make up the area that includes our bladder, vagina and uterus, and perineum, rectum and anus.  For women, there is a lot going on down there, and when something is off, we might get sent to several different specialists to help diagnose and treat the problem.  Thankfully, more and more women’s healthcare is addressing the pelvic floor and pelvic area health holistically, and we would love to hear your success stories with your healthcare professionals!  Please send them in to us at SalonConfessionsPodcast@gmail.com.

In this episode, Jen shares with us her recent journey with a pelvic floor issue called rectocele [rek·tuh·seel]. It is a prolapse of the wall between the rectum and the vagina.  Jen has learned a lot from this experience that surprised both of us, and we are so glad that we have this platform to share it with you.

Women’s bodies are incredibly complex, and we are continuously amazed that every few weeks and months we learn yet another new thing about what issues women face, treatments that are available, and challenges that we face in the healthcare and insurance system getting appropriate care.  Especially in this season of perimenopause and menopause.

Gigglefest Medicine- When Laughing with your Bestie is the Perfect Cure to a Terrible Day

We’ve been doing this for FIVE seasons now, and every season, we end up with an episode that makes us laugh more than any other.  We call these our Gigglefests, and they are our favorite episodes to record and share with you.  We think they best capture the essence of our friendship, and the essence of all friendships.  Our closest friends are the people we can go and sit with when we are having the absolute worst day and they will just hang out and be there with us, and if we need help with a pick me up, they are there to help us laugh our way to a nice little rush of dopamine and endorphins, and a bit of an ab workout to boot!

Extreme Healing! With Mari Ruddy

On this episode, we invited Harper's friend Mari Ruddy to come in and get a pedicure and tell us about her story and her book Extreme Healing: Reclaim Your Life and Learn to Love Your Body.

Extreme Healing shares Mari's journey of finding salvation through cycling, running, and triathlon. These activities carried her through trauma, type 1 diabetes, and three rounds of cancer. In this book, Mari shares hard-won wisdom and personal experiences, aiming to inspire and motivate you to embrace the endurance athlete mindset and lifestyle for your health, joy, and well-being.

Mari’s story is amazing, resilient, and vulnerable, and she doesn’t hold back sharing all about her journey.  As you know, we don’t shy away from the hard parts of our stories here on Salon Confessions, because that is so often where the most important truths are held, and too often we hold them in secret, afraid to confess and share them.  But on our show, we know that by sharing these important truths, we draw people together, and make the dark and scary things easier to share with the people around us.  And when we share them, we empower others to share their confessions, and together, we keep shining light and opening up new conversations.

We’ve been watching and hearing it happen for 5 seasons now, and Mari’s story is a beautiful addition to that commitment we hold. www.MariRuddy.com

Grey's Analysis: A Young Adult’s Take on Mental Health

Ten years ago when Harper met her now husband Hudson, he brought a vibrant young 12-year-old into her life, her step-kiddo and soul-child, Grey.

Grey is someone with depth, alertness, creativity, sensitivity, and an adventurous spirit.  Grey has never walked the straight and narrow road, but has always found her way, meeting life's challenges with courage and confidence.

Grey is a senior in college, and we asked them to come on the show to talk about mental health, and their work in mental health support with at-risk youth, as well as her own mental health.  We wish we had as much language and as many tools as they have today when we were in our 20s!

We also chat about our favorite adventure guide, her dad —> Harper's husband Hudson, who takes us on extraordinary hikes that make us question our life choices, but always keeps us coming back for more.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and Grey's take on mental health. What do you wish you had known about mental health when you were in your 20s?

Twinkle Fingers, Twinkle Thumbs, That's The Way the LIFEHACKS Come!

The great thing about Life Hacks is they can be ANYTHING.  It can be things about cleaning your house or your stuff, managing your time, salvaging and repurposing, changing your mindset, cooking and meal planning, or just about anything that is a part of your daily life that someone has figured out an easier way to do.  And really, all of us have life hacks.  Maybe some of them are things we picked up from childhood that our parents or grandparents did, and we didn’t even know they were lifehacks until adulthood.

One of the best things about social media videos is all the lifehack learning we get from them.  Cooking tips, ADHD tips, cleaning hacks, parenting help… there is no shortage of ideas for making life easier in hours of tiktoks and Reels.  Now, whether that’s time well spent…well, that’s a different story.

We would love to hear your favorite life hacks!  Send us your go-to ways to make life easier!

[Hypnotic Dreams]: The Elusive Good Night's Sleep

Welcome to Season 5 of Salon Confessions!

On our first episode of the season, we are talking about SLEEP!  Do you remember being young and able to sleep through the night all the way until 11am or even noon?  Harper was never great at falling asleep, but she didn’t suffer from sleepless nights very often.  Yet every decade, that precious commodity of sleep just seems to slip further and further away, despite all of the urgent warnings about how vital it is to our health.  These days, we celebrate when we get a full 7 hours. Falling asleep, staying asleep, feeling rested - all of these feel like a battle to fight and work at daily, and so do so many of our friends.

We have both found some things that are working for us, and we’ll talk about what we’ve tried and what’s helped on this episode,  but we’d love to hear from you too - what’s worked for you??  Maybe you have something in your toolbox that will help inspire us or our other listeners!
